Hanuki Valley is a scenic destination located in Takahagi City, Ibaraki Prefecture, where the untouched beauty of the natural environment remains preserved. Formed by the mountains of the Taga mountain range and the deep valley carved by the Hanuki River, this area offers a changing landscape that evolves with every season. The highlight is undoubtedly autumn, when the surrounding foliage turns into a brilliant tapestry of color, creating a breathtaking harmony with the flowing river. It is a popular spot for hikers and travelers looking to escape the bustle of daily life and immerse themselves in the profound silence of nature.
This region has long been protected as a natural sanctuary. It was designated as the Kita-Ibaraki Prefectural Natural Park in 1953. Over the years, through various name changes and boundary adjustments, it has been preserved as part of the Hanuki-en Natural Park, maintaining its precious ecosystem and scenic beauty. The area also carries local history through its landmarks; for example, a waterfall once known as "Fudo-daki" is now widely recognized as "Otome-daki." This dedication to environmental conservation ensures that visitors can enjoy the landscape while respecting the delicate balance of the local ecosystem.

The greatest attraction of Hanuki Valley is the stunning view of the clear stream flowing through the deep gorge, framed by dramatic cliffs. The area known as "Name rigafuchi" and the beautiful waterfalls are must-see landmarks. Additionally, the nearby Hanuki Dam provides a unique landscape that complements the natural valley scenery. Every visit offers a new discovery, whether it is the seasonal flora or the unique geological formations. Walking along the hiking trails allows you to observe how the scenery shifts and reveals new perspectives with every step you take.
The most recommended time to visit is May, when the fresh greenery is at its peak, or late October through November for the spectacular autumn foliage season. During the autumn, the entire valley is bathed in fiery colors, making it a paradise for landscape photographers. In the summer, the refreshing sound of the stream makes it an excellent spot for a cool stroll to escape the heat. For the best experience, we recommend visiting between late morning and afternoon when the sunlight enhances the clarity of the water and the vibrancy of the plants.

Hiking is the primary activity here. The well-maintained trails allow you to connect deeply with nature while refreshing your mind and body. Many travelers visit specifically for photography, capturing the dramatic color changes of the seasons. The area is also excellent for nature observation, such as spotting seasonal plants and studying the unique topography. Please note that while the paths are great for walking, they are designed for nature enjoyment rather than serious mountain climbing.
There are several other natural attractions in the vicinity. You can explore the dam-related scenery at Mizunuma Dam or Hanuki Dam, often noted for their beautiful vistas. If you venture a bit further, you can visit the beautiful coastlines of Yoichi Beach or Ishihama Beach, or explore areas rich in historical cultural landscapes. Combining a visit to the valley with local hot spring (onsen) facilities or exploring the area around Takahagi Station will make for a truly fulfilling and relaxing trip.

To enjoy the stroll along the valley, comfortable walking shoes and appropriate clothing are essential. Since temperatures can fluctuate, especially during autumn or spring, we recommend dressing in layers. Please check information regarding parking and facility usage in advance.
