Hanamiyama Park, located in Fukushima City, Fukushima Prefecture, is a renowned park famous for its diverse variety of flowering trees. The park was named "Hanamiyama Park" in 1959 by its owner, Ichiro Abe, and has since maintained a tradition of being open to the public for free. Today, it is celebrated as a place where the landscape changes beautifully with the seasons. During the spring, a vast expanse of flowering trees covers the rolling hills, creating a sea of color. On clear days, the topography allows visitors to enjoy a magnificent view of the snow-capped Azuma Mountains and Mount Azuma-Kofuji in the distance.
The park has a unique history as a privately owned land that is managed with deep community roots. Since its naming in 1959, the tradition of free admission has been upheld through goodwill. As popularity grew—surpassing 200,000 visitors in 2004—the Hanamiyama Environmental Improvement Council was established by the Fukushima City Tourism Association and the Fukushima City Product Promotion Association to enhance the tourism environment. In 2007, the park was recognized as a vital cultural asset when its scenery, including the colorful flowering trees and the view of the Azuma Mountains, was selected as one of the "Fukushima City Top 100 Landscapes."
A striking feature of the park is the unique shape of its trees. Due to a traditional pruning method where branches are cut at approximately 1 meter above the ground, the trees develop a dense, bushy appearance that resembles an inverted brush or broom. This creates a distinctive and beautiful silhouette when the flowers bloom. The diverse species are planted across the undulating hills, ensuring a changing landscape throughout the year. On bright spring days, the contrast between the colorful blossoms and the white, snow-capped peaks of the Azuma Mountains provides an unforgettable view.
The landscape undergoes significant changes throughout the year, with the peak season being from March to April when the spring blossoms are in full bloom. Visiting during daylight hours is highly recommended to enjoy the vivid colors of the flowers and the clear, sharp contrast of the distant mountains. The park is an ideal environment for nature walks and gentle hiking. Visitors can enjoy the scenery while strolling through the natural paths. Occasionally, local "Flower Guides" (Fukushima Hana Annai-nin) are active in the area to provide expert knowledge and guidance. Please note that while nature observation is encouraged, large parties or banquets (drinking/parties) are strictly prohibited to preserve the peaceful atmosphere.
The park is easily accessible from Fukushima City center and is surrounded by various local sightseeing spots. During certain seasons, it is often visited as part of a larger floral route that includes nearby spots like the "Fukushima Hana Korowa" (Fukushima Flower Corridor).
As the park consists of hilly and undulating terrain, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please dress according to the weather and season. Note that banquets or large social gatherings involving alcohol are prohibited on the premises.
