Hanamigata Cemetery is a large-scale natural cemetery located in Kotoura Town, Tottori Prefecture, stretching along the coastline. It is a rare sight, being one of the largest natural cemeteries in Western Japan. Spanning approximately 350 meters along the coast, the sight of roughly 20,000 gravestones creates a profound and unique atmosphere for all visitors.
The site is home to the "Akizaki-to," a stone tower approximately 3 meters in height dating back to the late Kamakura period. This tower features a highly rare architectural style found only near the Akizaki area, serving as an important relic of the region's history. There is also a local legend that the famous writer Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo) once visited this area and wrote about its unique, ethereal atmosphere. It is a precious cultural landscape where nature and history are deeply intertwined.
The greatest charm of Hanamigata is the seamless integration of the cemetery with the coastline. Visitors can contemplate the vast rows of gravestones while listening to the rhythmic sound of the waves. The Akizaki-to tower is a must-see, representing a significant piece of local history. The best time to visit is during the Obon season (around August). The sight of the lanterns illuminating the shore is a special experience unique to this time of year. During the daytime, the contrast between the blue sea and the stone structures is beautiful, allowing for a clear observation of the historical architecture.

As this is a natural cemetery located in a remote area without nearby commercial facilities, there are no fees for entry or services required at the site. No cash or card payments are necessary.
English-language signage and staff support are very limited in this area. Please prepare accordingly.
No advance reservations are required. This is a naturally occurring site that is open to the public at all times.
Since you will be walking along the coastline, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please also bring a hat to protect against the sun and dress according to the season.
Photography of the landscape is permitted; however, please maintain a respectful attitude and observe proper etiquette, as this is a sacred cemetery site.
Due to the natural terrain, the area may have uneven surfaces, steps, or unpaved paths. Please watch your step while walking.
