Hanamaki Onsenkyo is a collective term for the hot spring areas located in the western part of Hanamaki City, Iwate Prefecture. It consists of 12 distinct hot spring groups emerging along the Daichi and Toyosawa Rivers, often referred to as the "Hanamaki 12 Springs." This area offers a diverse range of accommodations, including traditional single-family inns (ikken-yado), traditional medicinal bathhouses (toji-ba), and large-scale hotels. As the area is designated as the Hanamaki Onsenkyo Prefectural Natural Park, visitors can enjoy exploring various types of hot springs while immersed in a breathtakingly beautiful natural environment.
Hot springs have been flowing in this region since ancient times. Historically, the "Hanamaki Railway" operated to connect Hanamaki Station on the Tohoku Main Line with the famous hot spring destinations like Hanamaki Onsen and Shinai Onsen, serving as a vital transport link for travelers. Due to its unique topography, the hot spring clusters located upstream of the Toyosawa River are sometimes referred to as the "Hanamaki Minami Onsen Gorge" (or Minami Hanamaki Onsen Gorge).
