The Haminoura Rice Terraces are a stunning example of terraced farming that utilizes the natural coastal topography of Genkai Town, Saga Prefecture. The paddies climb the slopes like a staircase leading up from the sea, creating a landscape often referred to as "Senmaida" (thousand rice fields). Within an area of 11.5 hectares, 283 individual rice paddies form an artistic, undulating pattern that follows the natural curves of the land. This site continues to captivate visitors as a representative symbol of Japan's beautiful rural landscape.
Historically, these rice terraces were constructed to adapt to the challenging coastal terrain. Despite the constraints of the land, generations of farmers have maintained this beautiful landscape through traditional methods. This site has been officially selected as one of the "100 Best Rice Terraces in Japan" by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, recognizing it as a vital cultural landscape. Local efforts to preserve this scenery ensure that the traditional way of life, living in harmony with nature, continues to be passed down to the present day.
The greatest charm is the dynamic view where the sea and the rice paddies become one. The moment the sun sets over the horizon and dyes the water-filled paddies in shades of brilliant orange is truly a speechless experience. The contrast between the geometric patterns of the paths and the calm sea makes this a premier destination for photography enthusiasts. Additionally, you can ring the "Eternal Bell" (Shiawase no Kane), a bell of happiness, to create a special memory of your visit.

In spring, the water-filled paddies act like mirrors reflecting the sky, while in summer, the lush green rice plants sway in the breeze, full of life.
