Lake Hamana is a large lake spanning approximately 15 km east-to-west and 6 km north-to-south, situated between Hamamatsu City and Kosai City in western Shizuoka Prefecture. Its most distinctive feature is that it is a "brackish lake," meaning seawater from the Pacific Ocean flows in through a narrow opening. This mixing of salt and fresh water has created a incredibly diverse ecosystem, supporting 401 species of fish, 59 species of crustaceans, and 84 species of mollusks.
Historically, the lake was originally a freshwater lake. However, following the way of the land changing during the Miyo Earthquake in 1498, the sandbar broke, transforming it into the brackish lake seen today.
