Shimizu Dam (commonly known as Shimizu Dam) is a gravity-type concrete and stone embankment located in Taketa City, Oita Prefecture. Designated as a National Important Cultural Property in 1999, it is celebrated for its extraordinary beauty, often called the "most beautiful dam in Japan." The way the water cascades over the edge creates a visual effect similar to a flowing white robe, perfectly embodying its name, "Shimizu" (White Water). Having also received the Good Design Award in 2011, it is recognized as a modern industrial heritage site that seamlessly blends functional engineering with aesthetic elegance.
This embankment was constructed to resolve water shortages for the Fuji Ooi routes flowing through the Taketa and Ogata districts. Construction began in April 1934 and was completed in March 1938. The project was designed and supervised by Yasuo Ono, an agricultural engineer in Oita at the time. To address the challenges of the fragile volcanic geology, the dam features an advanced design to mitigate the impact of falling water. The dam is also widely recognized as a local icon, having been featured in television commercials for the famous Oita mugi-shochu brand, "Nikaido."
The primary attraction is the mesmerizing sight of the water cascading over the dam. The way the current spreads out like a wide, white cloth is a captivating spectacle for all visitors. The design incorporates clever topographical engineering: the right bank features a curved path called "Musha-gaeshi," while the left bank utilizes a stepped path. These features are designed to control the intensity of the water flow, creating a controlled, artistic landscape. The heavy, textured stone surface adds a sense of historical depth and grandeur to the view.
The visual experience of the dam changes significantly depending on the season and water volume. During periods of high water levels, the cascading white flow is dynamic and powerful. Conversely, during dry periods, the water flow may be minimal or non-existent. Please note that there is a scheduled overflow suspension period from November 27, 2025, to mid-June 2026, during which the water will not flow over the dam. We highly recommend checking the water status before your visit to ensure you see the full spectacle.
