The Hakusan Shirakawa-go White Road is a fully paved, toll-based scenic route spanning 33.3 km through Hakusan National Park, connecting Ishikawa and Gifu Prefectures. Driving through dynamic terrain with elevations ranging from 500m to 1,450m, you will feel the raw power of the nature surrounding the base of Mt. Hakusan. The road is famous for its seasonal transformations: the fresh greenery of spring, the crisp air of summer, the brilliant autumn colors, and the serene snowy landscapes (outside of the operational period).
This road was developed as a vital route to connect the Ishikawa and Gifu sides while preserving the pristine landscapes of Hakusa National Park. Mt. Hakusan has long been a site of spiritual worship, and the surrounding area is deeply rooted in a culture of coexistence with nature. The White Road provides seamless access to historically significant areas such as the Shirakawa-go village and the Hida Takayama region, contributing significantly to the local tourism and cultural heritage.
There are several enchanting spots to stop along the way. The 'Shirakawa-go Observatory' offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the World Heritage-listed Shirakawa-go village; depending on the season, you may witness a spectacular 'sea of clouds' drifting through the valley. At the 'Mikata-iwa Parking Lot,' you can enjoy sweeping views of the grand mountain ranges. Nearby, the 'Jagaya Park' area allows for walks through ancient beech forests and views of lush waterfalls. On the Ishikawa side, you can also experience the energy of nature through seven different waterfalls located in the area.
The scenery changes dramatically with the seasons. From June to early July, the contrast between the fresh greenery and the remaining snow on the Northern Alps is a highlight. From late September to early November, you can witness a stunning gradient of autumn colors across different altitudes. Additionally, a special 'Autumn Morning Time' is available from late September to late October, allowing entry from 7:00 AM. This early morning window is the best time to witness the mystical and ethereal sea of clouds.
The primary activity is a scenic drive via private car or rental car. It is a perfect way to feel the fresh mountain air through your window. For a more active experience, you can walk the trails near Jagaya Park to observe waterfalls and local flora. For relaxation, 'Oyani no Yu' offers a way to unwind with footbaths or open-air baths while gazing at the Obaba Waterfall. Taking a break at local rest areas to enjoy regional specialties and tea while overlooking the mountains is also highly recommended.
Near the end of the White Road, you will find the World Heritage site of Shirakawa-go, where you can wander through the traditional Gassho-zukuri farmhouses. The road also provides excellent access to the Takayama area in Gifu and the Kaga Onsenkyo hot spring area in Ishikawa. Combining a drive through this route with a visit to the historic streets of Takayama or the heritage village of Shirakawa-go makes for a truly unforgettable travel itinerary.
