The Hakusan Shirakawa-go White Road is a 33.3km mountain toll road that connects Shirakawa Village in Gifu Prefecture with Hakusan City in Ishikawa Prefecture, passing through the heart of Hakusan National Park. As you drive through varying elevations from 500m to 1,450m, you will encounter a dynamic landscape of natural beauty. This route offers a special escape from daily life, where you can witness seasonal changes in alpine flora, majestic waterfalls, and even the mystical sight of a sea of clouds (unkai) on certain mornings.
Historically, this route has served as an important connection between the rich natural environments of the Hakusan area and the Shirakawa-go region. The road is carefully maintained to allow visitors to experience the breathtaking beauty of Hakson National Park's ecosystem while preserving its natural integrity. It serves as a vital bridge connecting the iconic Gassho-zukuri villages of the World Heritage site, Shirakawa-go, with the hot spring areas of Hakusan and Kaga in Ishikawa Prefecture, contributing significantly to regional tourism.
Along the route, you will find several spots that showcase the wonders of nature. A highlight is the valley scenery created by seven different waterfalls, including the famous Ubaga-taki, which is recognized as one of Japan's top 100 waterfalls. In the higher altitude areas, you can experience the lush beech forests and vibrant alpine plants up close. The road is a popular spot for photography, offering stunning vistas that change beautifully with every season.
The White Road offers completely different charms depending on when you visit. From spring to summer, the landscape is filled with vibrant greenery and alpine flowers, making for a refreshing drive. In autumn, the mountains turn into a brilliant tapestry of red and gold foliage. For photography enthusiasts, early morning visits can provide the chance to capture the mystical sea of clouds. Please note that the road is closed during the winter season (from November 11th to early June), so always check the current road status before your trip.
The primary way to enjoy this area is by car. Driving through the winding mountain roads while breathing in the crisp, clean air is a truly exceptional experience. From various parking areas along the route, you can also enjoy nature walks. For example, at the Mikata-iwa Parking Area, you can hike up a trail to enjoy even more expansive views from a higher vantage point, allowing you to feel the raw energy of nature.
There are many wonderful destinations at either end of the White Road. On the Gifu side, you can explore the World Heritage-listed Shirakawa-go Gassho-zukuri village to see traditional architecture. On the Ishikawa side, the road leads toward the Hakusan and Kaga Onsen areas, where you can relax and soothe your fatigue in natural hot springs. The surrounding area is perfect for a road trip, featuring various nature learning facilities and historic villages.
As you are driving through high altitudes, weather can change rapidly. Temperatures are typically much lower than in the lowlands, so please prepare accordingly.
