Hakuma-kei is a scenic valley located in Usuki City, Oita Prefecture, which was officially designated as a scenic beauty site in 1978. Situated on an upper tributary of the Usuki River, the area is characterized by a harmonious landscape of lush greenery and historic stone bridges. The foundation of this site was laid in 1832 by Shimomura Shima-no-suke Masahiko and Shimizu Zenshichi, who developed the paths, constructed the eight stone bridges, and planted seasonal trees. This rich history has made it one of the most iconic locations for viewing autumn colors in the Usuki region.
The history of this area dates back to the Edo period. In 1832, the landscape was shaped by the vision of Shimomura Shima-no-suke Masahiko and Shimizu Zenshichi, who were deeply moved by the natural beauty of the valley. They constructed the paths and the eight stone bridges, while also planting seasonal flora such as maple trees and sacred nutmeg (Nanten). Furthermore, the area holds spiritual significance, with local legends suggesting that the site was once a place of worship for the deity Toyoke Hime-no-kami, blending natural beauty with ancient traditions.
The most striking feature of Hakuma-kei is the collection of eight stone bridges scattered throughout the valley. A unique way to experience the area is to walk the path while counting each bridge as you cross the stream. The seasonal changes in the surrounding trees are also a major draw; during autumn, the vibrant colors of the leaves create a breathtaking contrast against the stone bridges and the flowing river, offering a truly immersive natural experience.
While Hakuma-kei offers beautiful scenery throughout the year, it is most famous during the autumn foliage season. The 'Hakuma-kei Momiji Festival' is held annually in late November, which is when the maple leaves reach their most brilliant hues. Visiting during daylight hours is recommended to fully appreciate the vivid colors and the sharp contrast between the autumn leaves and the stone bridges.
