Hakone Shissei Kaden (Hakone Wetland Botanical Garden) is a specialized botanical garden located in Sengokuhara, Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture. The garden is designed around plants that thrive in wetlands, such as marshes, rivers, and lakes. It features approximately 1,700 species of plants, including 200 species of wetland plants found in various Japanese environments ranging from lowlands to high altitudes. The garden's unique charm lies in how the landscape and plant life change dramatically with each passing season.
Established in 1976, the garden was created to protect the environment of the Sengokuhara wetlands and to raise awareness of their natural beauty. It holds the distinction of being Japan's first botanical garden dedicated to wetland plants. A notable historical moment occurred on July 3, 1979, when Emperor Showa and Empress Kojo visited this area during their travels to the Susaki Imperial Villa. For decades, the garden has served as a vital center for preserving the natural environment of Hakone while educating the public on plant biodiversity.
The garden paths are thoughtfully designed to transition from lowland wetlands toward alpine plant zones, allowing visitors to observe the gradual change in ecosystems. In the exhibition room, you can learn about the flora and fauna of the Sengokuhara wetlands through detailed photographs and panels. The facility also features seasonal video presentations, such as "Spring Flowers" or "Summer Flowers," to deepen your understanding of plant life cycles. The management building is fully equipped with a shop, a lecture room, and restrooms.
The variety of blooming plants changes significantly depending on the season. In spring, you can enjoy Skunk Cabbage (Mizubasho), Japanese Skunk Cabbage, and Trillium, signaling the arrival of early summer. Summer brings Nikko Kipser (Lysimachia) and Lotus flowers, creating a lush water-side view. In autumn, the landscape is colored by Gentians and colorful autumn leaves. The garden is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (last entry at 4:30 PM). Visiting during the bright daylight hours is highly recommended to fully appreciate the colors and scenery.
The garden offers guided tours led by volunteers who provide explanations of the seasonal plants. These tours are held twice a day (at 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM) with a capacity of 10 people per session. You can sign up at the information desk starting from 9:00 AM on the day of your visit. Additionally, the exhibition room provides a visual learning experience through video displays. While photography is permitted and the garden is a peaceful place for observation, please note that collecting any plants or wildlife is strictly prohibited.
Hakone Shissei Kaden is situated in the scenic Sengokuhara area of Hakone. The surrounding area features the Sengokuhara Wetlands, convenient bus stops, and various accommodation options. You can easily access the garden via the Hakone Tozan Bus from directions such as Gora or Hakone-Yumoto. It is a perfect starting point for a nature-themed walking tour through the local landscape.
While the garden has well-maintained paths, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes to enjoy the nature observation. Please remember the golden rule of nature conservation: "Take only pictures, leave only footprints"—collecting any plants is strictly forbidden. The souvenir shop offers unique items such as original postcards, photo books, and seasonal plants (including summer-limited carnivorous plants). Please check with staff regarding specific payment methods or rules upon entry.
