Located on Hakkeijima island in Kanazawa Ward, Yokohama, Hakkeijima Sea Paradise is a large-scale complex resort featuring an aquarium, amusement park, shopping mall, hotel, and marina. The entire artificial island is dedicated to the concept of "Umi-iku" (Sea-education), allowing visitors to deepen their knowledge of marine life and experience the wonders of the ocean through all five senses.
Operations began in March 1988, led by the Seibu Group. The park occupies a portion of Hakkeijima, an artificial island created by the city of Yokohama. Over the years, the facility has expanded to include the pyramid-shaped Aqua Museum, the dolphin-focused Dolphin Fantasy, and the ocean-themed Pleasure Land. The mascot, "Sea Para-shi," is modeled after Yuki-maru and Yuki-hime, the real polar bears living at the Aqua Museum.
The park offers a diverse range of exhibition areas. At the iconic pyramid-shaped "Aqua Museum," visitors can observe a vast array of creatures ranging from the deep sea to tropical waters across five floors. At "Dolphin Fantasy," you can witness the dynamic movements of dolphins through cylindrical and tunnel-style tanks.
At the "Fureai Lagoon," the proximity to marine life is so close you may even feel the ocean spray. Additionally, "Umi-Farm" offers an educational experience where you can learn about the marine environment through hands-on fishing and submarine research, blending play with learning.
There is always something new to discover. For instance, the "OTO-RACTION PARK" is scheduled to open in August 2026, bringing even more modern entertainment to the park. The Aqua Museum also allows you to experience the changing seasons through its evolving exhibits and environmental displays. The park is packed with interactive attractions. The "Surf Coaster Leviathan" in Pleasure Land is Japan's first roller coaster to feature segments over the water, creating a dramatic experience with waves and water sprays. You can also enjoy "Marine Cart Fantasia," a game-like experience where you drive a kart to collect starfish.
At the "Umi-Farm" food education zone, visitors can learn the connection between the sea and the table by having their caught fish prepared for them. These activities make it an ideal destination for travelers seeking immersive, hands-on tourism.
The island also hosts "Hotel Sea Paradise Inn" and various marina facilities like "Sea Paradise Marina" and "Hakkejima Marina." With numerous shopping areas and restaurants scattered throughout the island, you can enjoy a full day of leisure and relaxation.
Since the park covers a large area, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Please note that attractions have height restrictions (e.g., 120cm+ for Leviathan; children under 140cm require a guardian for Marine Cart Fantasia) and some age limits (e.g., 65+).
