Hagoromo Falls is a majestic multi-tiered waterfall with a total drop of approximately 270 meters, located in the Tengin-kyo Gorge area of Higashikawa Town, Hokkaido. The way the water cascades down seven distinct rock layers is incredibly elegant, evoking the image of a celestial maiden's robe (Hagoromo), which gives the falls its name. The falls are surrounded by deep forests, creating a striking contrast between the white rushing water and the vibrant colors of the seasons—from the fresh greenery of spring to the brilliant foliage of autumn. A well-maintained walking path allows visitors to immerse themselves in this grand natural landscape.
The waterfall was named "Hagoromo no Taki" (Hagoromo Falls) by a man of letters who was moved by its sublime beauty. The name refers to the graceful movement of the water, which resembles the celestial robe of a heavenly maiden. Following a natural disaster in 2013 that damaged the viewing platforms and paths, the area has been restored with new walkways, ensuring that visitors can once again safely observe the magnificent sight. It stands as a symbol of the Tengin-kyo area, situated at the southeastern foot of the Daisetsuzan National Park.
The most captivating feature is the movement of the water as it splits and cascades down the high cliffs. Because of its multi-tiered structure, the waterfall presents a different expression depending on the angle from which you view it. Additionally, the surrounding area features striking columnar jointing in the rock faces, offering a unique geological spectacle. During the autumn foliage season, the surrounding trees turn brilliant shades of red and yellow, creating a breathtaking scene where the colorful leaves and the white waterfall blend into one.
The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. From spring to summer, the volume of water is high due to snowmelt, creating a refreshing mist that nourishes the surrounding greenery. The contrast between the bright green leaves and the white water is particularly striking in early summer. In autumn (around October), the area is bathed in rich colors of red and gold. Please note that the walking paths are closed during the winter season (from approximately November to early June), so please check the schedule before visiting.
To enjoy the full view of the falls, most visitors engage in a light trek to the viewing platform. It takes about 20 minutes to walk from the public parking lot to the falls, and approximately 1.5 hours for a round trip including the trek to the viewing platform. This is a nature-based walking experience where you can listen to the powerful sound of the water in a serene, tranquil environment.
The Tengin-kyo area offers many other attractions, including unique rock formations with columnar joints and scenic spots steeped in history. The surrounding region also features hot spring facilities (onsen) and local dining and accommodation options related to Higashikawa Town, allowing you to experience local culture alongside your nature walk.
As you will be walking on natural paths, comfortable clothing and sturdy walking shoes (trekking shoes are highly recommended) are essential. Be mindful of your footing, as some areas may be muddy or have uneven terrain. While you can use the public parking lot, please avoid parking on the roadside. It is also recommended to carry your own toilet paper for use at local facilities.
