The Sasanami Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings is located in the southern part of Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It served as a vital midpoint on the Hagi Okan, the historic highway connecting the Hagi castle town with Hofu. The settlement developed with a crucial function as a resting station (shuku-eki) for feudal lords and travelers during the daimyo processions (sankin-kotai). In 2011, the area was officially designated as a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. While maintaining its agricultural roots, the area's unique architectural styles and land layouts have been preserved to reflect its history as a bustling post town.
This region played a pivotal role as a transportation hub during the Edo period. As the Hagi Okan route was developed, the town's function as a resting station was strengthened, leading to the formation of a cityscape centered around the 'Ochaya' (tea house) where the lords would take breaks. Because it flourished as both an agricultural and transportation hub, many historical buildings, structures, and environmental assets remain intact today. Hagi City boasts several such preservation districts, and Sasanami stands as one of the most significant, telling the story of the region's rich cultural heritage.
A striking feature of Sasanami is that the land divisions (jiwari) from the Edo period remain largely unchanged. The architecture and structures that once served the post station, along with artifacts of daily life from that era, can be seen throughout the district. The area surrounding the Ochaya, once a place of rest for the lords, is particularly symbolic of the region's history. Walking through the streets, you will feel the atmosphere of the old highway through the preserved historic residences and scenic landscapes.
As Sasanami is an open area for free strolling, you can enjoy the historical scenery at any time. During the bright daylight hours, the intricate details of the architecture and the structure of the streets are clearly visible, making it an excellent time for photography. Visiting during quieter hours also offers a peaceful opportunity to soak in the calm, nostalgic atmosphere of a former post town.
The primary activity here is a 'historical stroll' to explore the atmosphere of an Edo-period post town. Rather than visiting specific indoor facilities, the entire preservation district acts like an open-air museum. You can walk through the streets while observing the traditional architectural styles and street layouts. Nearby, you can also visit historical sites such as the Former Kobayashi Family Residence (Hagi Okan Omotenashi Chaya) to touch upon the local culture.
There are several other historical spots scattered around Sasanami. For instance, the Former Kobayashi Family Residence is a wonderful facility to feel the local history. Additionally, you can visit the nearby Fuchidaira Falls, a site rich in nature, or stop by 'Michi-no-Eki Asahi' to find local specialties and information about the area.
It is highly recommended to wear comfortable walking shoes, as some paths may be unpaved or have uneven surfaces. As this is a residential area, please be mindful of privacy and respect the locals.
