It has been designated as a national Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings because it perfectly preserves the structure and atmosphere of samurai residences from the Edo period. The most striking feature is the continuous stretch of heavy, elegant earthen walls (tsuchi-bei) and traditional buildings that define the cityscape.
This district served as a residential area for samurai during the era of the Hagi Domain.
