Hado Misaki is a scenic cape located at the tip of the Higashimatsuura Peninsula in Chosei Town, Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture. As part of the Genkai Quasi-National Park, it is recognized as one of the '100 Best Beaches in Japan' and is also designated as a 'Lovers' Sanctuary.' The greatest draw of this location is the underwater observatory, which allows you to observe the sea life directly from below, and the breathtaking views of the coastline. The area also serves as a resort destination, featuring amenities such as beaches, campsites, and public lodging facilities to enjoy the great outdoors.
The area holds significant historical value. To the south lies the site of Nagoyoshi Castle, believed to have been built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1592. The surrounding area is dotted with remnants of battle sites that tell the story of past conflicts. At the very tip of the cape stands an unmanned lighthouse that has long protected maritime navigation. Additionally, the presence of the 'Dol Hareubang' stone statue—a guardian deity from Jeju Island, South Korea—highlights the international cultural exchange and connections of this region.
The iconic symbol of Hado Misaki is the Underwater Observatory. Connected to the land by an 86-meter-long pier, the structure features an underwater viewing room at a depth of 7 meters. Through 24 specialized windows, visitors can observe a diverse marine ecosystem, including tropical fish like Sea Breams and various sea plants and shellfish. From the observation deck, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the islands floating in the Genkai Sea. The scenery becomes particularly dramatic during sunset, when the sky and sea are bathed in golden hues.
