Tatehana Park is a neighborhood park located on high ground at the mouth of the Arai-da River in Hachinohe City, Aomori Prefecture. Spanning approximately 1.9 hectares, the park features lookout points that take advantage of the natural terrain and the 24.2m tall "Gret Tower Minato" observation deck. The park offers a harmonious environment with grassy lawns, playground equipment, and rest areas. Additionally, the "Hachinohe Minato Experience Learning Center" (affectionately known as Minatchi), which opened in 2019, is registered as a disaster memorial facility dedicated to passing down the history of the region and the lessons learned from the Great East Japan Earthquake.
The area is deeply rooted in the history and culture of the Minato region. The adjacent Hachinohe Minato Experience Learning Center plays a vital role in preserving local traditions and educating future generations about the realities and lessons of the tsunami damage caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake. As a disaster memorial facility, it serves as an important educational site for deepening understanding of natural disasters.
The park offers several key attractions. First, the 24.2m tall "Gret Tower Minato" provides a spectacular panoramic view of the surrounding landscape. Second, during spring, the park becomes a popular destination for cherry blossom viewing. The park is also well-equipped for families, featuring various children's play equipment (such as combination play structures, slides, ball swings, chain log crossings, and climbing slopes) and fitness equipment (including bow touch, rocking boards, and twist circles). Visitors can also enjoy the scenic water-side decks, observation decks, and rest areas (azumaya).
Operating hours vary by season: Summer (July–August) is 06:30 to 21:00; Spring/Autumn (April–June, September) is 09:00 to 21:00; and Winter (October–March) is 09:00 to 19:00. Spring (around April to May) is the peak season when the entire park is colored by cherry blossoms. At night, the area is illuminated until 22:00, allowing visitors to enjoy the beautiful night views.
Visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls through nature or exercise using the various playground and fitness equipment. At the Hachinohe Minato Experience Learning Center, you can engage in educational experiences regarding local history and disaster prevention. The park also provides numerous benches, resting areas, and outdoor tables, creating an open and relaxing environment for a break.
Directly adjacent to the park is the Gret Tower Minato, offering incredible views. The surrounding natural environment near the mouth of the Arai-da River is home to several facilities dedicated to local history. The park is conveniently located about a 10-minute walk from JR Mutsu-Minato Station, making it an excellent base for exploring the Minato area.
Since the park is located on high ground, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. When using the rest areas (wooden single-story buildings), please note that pets and any form of open flames/fire are strictly prohibited. Please ensure you take all your trash home with you. There are two parking areas: the Upper Park Parking (22 spaces) and the Lower Park Parking (17 spaces, including 2 large bus spaces). If traveling by large bus, please use the Lower Park Parking due to road width restrictions. Wheelchair users are encouraged to consult with the facility in advance regarding accessibility and stairs.
