Hachimanzaka is a beautiful, straight slope located in Motomachi, Hakodate City, Hokkaido. It is widely recognized as one of the most iconic landscapes in Hakodate, standing alongside the famous night view from Mt. Hakodate in popularity. At the end of the slope, the view opens up to the sea, where you can see the Seikan Ferry Memorial Ship Mashu Maru moored in the harbor. The name of the slope is derived from the fact that the Hakodate Hachimangu Shrine once stood at the top of this hill.
The name of this slope traces back to the Hakodate Hachimangu Shrine that was once located nearby. Historically, the shrine was related to the site of the residence of Kono Masamichi (near the current Motomachi Park). In 1880, following a major fire, the shrine was moved to the vicinity of the current Yachigashira-cho, but the name of the slope remained unchanged. While the path was once more curved, it has since been developed into the straight, majestic road seen today.
The greatest feature of Hachimanzaka is the expansive view of the ocean that unfolds as you reach the top of the slope. The sight of the Seikan Ferry Memorial Ship Mashu Maru in the harbor creates a stunning maritime landscape. The slope is equipped with handrails and stairs along the sides, ensuring a safe way to enjoy the view. Having been used as a filming location for various commercials and media, it is a beloved destination for photography enthusiasts.
Hachimanzaka offers different expressions depending on the season and time of day. During the winter "Hakodate Illumination" period, the street trees and cobblestones are beautifully lit up, creating a magical atmosphere. For safety, road heating is often implemented during the winter months. During the day, you can enjoy the bright blue sea and ships, while at night, the area offers a romantic atmosphere that complements the famous Hakodate night views.
This is primarily a spot for sightseeing and photography. Visitors often use the dramatic gradient of the slope to capture dynamic compositions. The surrounding area is dotted with historical buildings, hotels, and charming cafes, making it easy to stroll through the historic streets. While a typical visit to the slope itself takes about 15 minutes, you can spend much more time exploring the surrounding neighborhood.
The area around Hachimanzaka is part of the historic Motomachi district, characterized by its preserved Western-style architecture. It is located near the waterfront area, including the Red Brick Warehouses, making it a very convenient hub for sightseeing. There are many accommodations and cafes nearby for relaxing during your walk. The area is easily accessible via the Ts shimoya-cho stop of the local tram.
As this is a sloped road, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. In winter, please wear shoes with good grip, as the surface can become icy and slippery. When taking photos, please be mindful of traffic and do not step into the road. Additionally, please respect local privacy and refrain from entering private properties or the paths leading to Hakodate Nishi High School. Please follow local etiquette by not littering and respecting the surrounding environment.
