The Hachimantai Aspite Line is a stunning 27km mountain road that traverses the Hachimantai mountain range (elevation 1,613m) between Iwate and Akita Prefectures. The name 'Aspite' refers to a shield-shaped volcano, reflecting the unique volcanic topography of this region. The route is famous for its dramatic seasonal shifts, most notably the 'Snow Corridor' in spring, where massive walls of snow line both sides of the road. This route offers a front-row seat to the dynamic power of nature through your car window.
This road symbolizes the rugged volcanic landscape of Hachimantai. The area's history is defined by its complex terrain and heavy snowfall, which create awe-inspiring natural phenomena. Because of the delicate environment, the road is subject to seasonal closures and strict management to ensure the preservation of the natural ecosystem while allowing human-nature coexistence.
Immediately following the spring opening, the road is flanked by vertical walls of snow several meters high. The contrast between the brilliant blue sky and the pristine white snow walls is a sight unique to this season.
From late May to early June, the 'Dragon Eye' phenomenon draws many visitors. This occurs when the melting snow and reflections on the water surface of Kage-numa Pond create an appearance resembling a dragon's eye.
In summer, enjoy the sight of alpine plants like Eriophorum and the lush greenery of the Sakhalin fir forests. In autumn, the mountainside transforms into a tapestry of brilliant reds and golds, perfect for a scenic drive.
The primary experience is a scenic drive. However, you can also enjoy walking around the summit rest houses or the wooden boardwalks of Onuma Pond to observe the alpine flora and the unique reflections on the water.
