The Hachimantai Aspite Line is a scenic mountain road approximately 35 to 40 km long, connecting Kazuno City in Akita Prefecture and Hachimantai City in Iwate Prefecture. The name "Aspite" is derived from the fact that Hachimantai was once believed to be a shield volcano (Aspite). This route is renowned as one of the most spectacular scenic drives in the Tohoku region. As you ascend, you will witness shifting vegetation, various crater lakes, and a dynamic landscape shaped by volcanic activity. Because the scenery changes completely with each season, you can enjoy the beauty of nature year-round.
While this road once required a toll, it was opened to the public for free in 1992. Historically, the section in Akita Prefecture was designated as a prefectural road in 1959, and it has long served as a vital transportation and tourism route for the region. Today, it is managed as a major road spanning both Iwate and Akita prefectures, with a focus on preserving the pristine landscapes within the natural park.
The greatest charm of the Aspite Line is the variety of landscapes encountered during the drive. As the altitude increases, the road curves gently along the mountain slopes through high-altitude plateaus. The sight of various lakes scattered across the former crater areas is a unique feature of this area. From the Mikafuri Pass, the highest point at approximately 1,613m, you can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Depending on the season, you may encounter rare sights such as the "Dragon Eye" (clear blue water surfaces) in the spring or the magnificent "Snow Corridor" as the snow melts.
Each season offers a distinct experience. From mid-May to mid-June, you may witness the rare "Dragon Eye" phenomenon. In early to mid-October, the area becomes a famous spot for vibrant autumn foliage. In early spring (from late April), driving through the remaining snow walls is a popular option. Please note that during the winter season (early November to late April), many sections of the road are closed due to heavy snow. Additionally, during the initial opening period of the season, there may be nighttime closures (from 17:00 to 8:30), so please plan your driving time carefully.
Beyond driving, visitors can enjoy walking through nature. From the parking area at Mikafuri Pass, there is a roughly 30-minute walking trail leading toward the summit of Mt. Hachimantai, allowing you to experience the scenery of lakes like Hachiman-numa and Kama-numa up close. The area is also dotted with hot spring (onsen) villages, making it easy to combine a scenic drive with a relaxing soak in a natural hot spring.
The route is surrounded by the rich natural environment of the Towada-Hachimantai National Park. The region is famous for its hot spring culture, with nearby renowned spots such as Suminoyu Onsen and Goshogake Onsen. At higher altitudes, you can also observe pastoral landscapes and unique geological formations shaped by volcanic activity.
Since you will be driving at high altitudes, temperatures can drop significantly even in summer. We highly recommend bringing a warm jacket and dressing appropriately for the season. As this is a protected natural area, please ensure you carry out all trash and respect the environment.
