Gyoden Park is a sprawling natural oasis covering approximately 6.53 hectares in Namerikawa, Toyama Prefecture. The area has a deep historical connection to the Gion-sha shrine in Kyoto; it was once known as "Gion-den," which eventually evolved into its current name, "Gyoden." The park is celebrated for its rich biodiversity, offering visitors a serene environment filled with seasonal flowers and crystal-clear spring water. It is a beloved destination for those seeking the changing faces of Japanese nature, particularly during the early summer iris season and the spring cherry blossom season.
The name of this area is rooted in its history as part of the estate of the Gion-sha (the current Yasaka Shrine) in Kyoto. Originally called "Gion-den," the name underwent a phonetic shift over many generations to become "Gyoden." While it maintains these historical roots, the park has been beautifully preserved as a public space for relaxation and nature appreciation. A notable feature is the "Gyoden no Sawa Shimizu," which has been officially selected as one of the "100 Best Waters of Heisei," highlighting the region's long-standing history of being blessed with abundant and pure water resources.

The park features several distinct areas of interest that change with the seasons. The most prominent is the Iris Garden, where approximately 40,000 iris plants of about 88 different varieties bloom in a spectacular display from mid-to-late June. Another major highlight is the cherry blossom season in spring, when the park is adorned with beautiful flowering trees. Finally, the natural spring water, known as "Gyoden no Sawa Shimizu," provides a refreshing sight throughout the park. The sight of clear water flowing through the lush forest-like environment offers a true sense of Japan's natural beauty.
To experience the park at its best, timing is key. Spring is a popular time to visit to see the cherry blossoms in full bloom. However, the most spectacular season is early summer (mid-to-late June), when the 40,000 irises create a vibrant, colorful landscape. While the park is beautiful year-round due to its lush greenery and flowing springs, we recommend planning your visit around these specific floral blooming periods to maximize your experience.
Gyoden Park is an ideal destination for leisurely walks and nature photography. Visitors can wander through the various iris gardens, stroll along the cherry blossom paths, or simply enjoy the tranquil atmosphere near the spring water sources. The park provides a perfect setting for families and friends to reconnect with nature, listening to the sounds of the forest and the gentle flow of water while enjoying a peaceful moment outdoors.
The park is nestled within the scenic natural environment of Namerikawa City. It is easily accessible via a 15-minute walk from Namerikawa Station or by using the local community bus. For those driving, the park is conveniently located near the Namerikawa IC on the Hokuriku Expressway. Incorporating Gyoden Park into your Toyama sightseeing itinerary will provide a well-rounded experience of Japan's natural landscapes.
As the park features natural terrain and walking paths, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. While the park is a public space, please be mindful of local etiquette: please take all your trash home with you to protect the environment. Regarding payments, please note that while the park itself is free, any nearby facilities or parking fees should be checked for cash or card compatibility. English-language signage and staff support may be limited, so it is helpful to check a map in advance. For accessibility, the park provides designated parking spaces for wheelchairs.
