Gudari-numa is a beautiful spring pond and clear stream located in the Tashirodaira area of Aomori City, Aomori Prefecture. The area is fed by the underground waters of the Hakkoda Mountains, resulting in exceptionally high water transparency. The water flows from the spring pond into a clear stream approximately 20cm wide, so pure that the stones on the bottom are clearly visible. Surrounded by lush deciduous forests, the site offers a changing tapestry of natural beauty throughout the seasons.
The area has a history of livestock grazing, with horses and cattle once roaming these lands. The origin of the name "Gudari" is subject to various theories; some suggest it stems from "Kudari-sawa," others from "Kudasu" (meaning wasteland/ruins), or even an Ainu term for a southern end. While the exact etymology remains a mystery, the name reflects a long history of human interaction with this unique topography and water source.
The primary draw is the pristine spring water and the clarity of the stream. Because the water is so transparent, you can easily observe the riverbed and aquatic plants. In autumn, the surrounding deciduous trees turn brilliant shades of red and yellow, creating a stunning reflection on the water's surface. Additionally, visiting in the early morning offers a mystical experience, as mist often settles over the water, creating a serene and ethereal atmosphere alongside the dew-covered plants.
The landscape changes significantly with the seasons. The autumn season (roughly May to November) is particularly beautiful when the surrounding foliage displays vibrant colors. For the most tranquil experience, visit in the early morning to witness the mist and dew. During the bright daylight hours, the high transparency of the water makes it perfect for observing the stones on the bottom and the blue sky reflecting on the surface.
Activities here primarily consist of nature walks and photography. As you approach the water's edge, be prepared to navigate uneven terrain shaped by the natural landscape. It is a place to immerse yourself in the sounds of nature and the gentle flow of water. Please note that there are no formal recreational facilities; it is a destination dedicated to observing and appreciating the natural scenery.
Gudari-numa is located near the Tashirodaira Grazing Hut (Tashirodaira Bokujo). The pond is situated a short distance below the hut and serves as a key point for hikers exploring the local terrain. The broader region is also close to the Shirakami-Sanchi mountain range, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its rich natural beauty.
When walking near the water, please be mindful of the terrain. Since you may encounter mud or wet surfaces near the stream, bringing waterproof boots is highly recommended. As temperatures can fluctuate, please bring warm clothing. There are no fees for visiting this natural area, but please be prepared for any local travel needs. To protect the environment, please follow basic etiquette: carry all trash back with you and do not pick any plants or flowers.
