Gotenyama Garden is a beautiful Japanese garden spanning approximately 6,600 square meters (2,000 tsubo) in Shinagawa, Tokyo. Located adjacent to the Tokyo Marriott Hotel, it is a beloved urban oasis where visitors can experience lush nature amidst the city skyline. The garden features a meticulously designed landscape with ponds, waterfalls, and walking paths that follow the natural terrain, showcasing a diverse range of seasonal plants and scenery.
The area holds significant historical value, originating from the time when it served as a villa for the Tokugawa Shogunate during the Edo period. Since the Meiji era, the surrounding neighborhood has developed into a prestigious residential and commercial district. A notable feature within the garden is the tea house designed by the renowned architect Arata Isozaki, which represents a sophisticated fusion of traditional Japanese garden aesthetics and modern architectural design.

The garden's design masterfully utilizes the natural topography. A large artificial waterfall at the edge of the garden provides a soothing auditory and visual experience, reflecting the changing seasons. The garden is home to approximately 70 cherry trees, making it a premier destination for the 'Gotenyama Sakura Festival' in spring. During this time, the garden is illuminated at night, creating a magical atmosphere. In autumn, the maple and ginkgo trees turn vibrant hues of red and gold, beautifully reflected in the surface of the central pond.
The character of Gotenyama Garden shifts beautifully with the seasons. In spring (March to April), the focus is on the Yoshino cherry blossoms and enchanting night-time illuminations. In autumn (November to December), the landscape is bathed in the brilliant colors of autumn foliage. For a bright, daytime stroll to observe botanical details, visit during the morning or afternoon. For a more dramatic and special experience, visit during the evening to witness the seasonal light-up events.

The garden features a compact walking course of approximately 400 meters, which can be completed in about 15 minutes, making it an easy stroll for all visitors. The well-maintained paths allow you to disconnect from the bustle of daily life and enjoy a moment of zen. You can also pair your visit with a relaxing break at the adjacent hotel or nearby facilities. Depending on the season, special viewing experiences are often provided to highlight specific botanical events.
Adjacent to the Tokyo Marriott Hotel, the garden is a convenient retreat for both hotel guests and local business professionals. It is easily accessible from Shinagawa Station and Kita-Shinagawa Station, and the surrounding area is rich with commercial facilities, making it an easy stop during a day of Tokyo sightseeing. The neighborhood also features various parks and buildings with deep historical roots.
While the walking paths are well-maintained, the garden utilizes natural slopes and uneven terrain, so we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. To preserve the natural environment, please be mindful of your surroundings. We also recommend checking the opening hours of any nearby facilities in advance to ensure a smooth visit.
