Gotemba Gu Shingo-gome is a scenic spot located at an altitude of 1,440m on the slopes of Mt. Fuji. One of its greatest draws is the ease of access by car, making it a convenient destination for travelers. This area offers a distinct landscape compared to other Mt. Fuji routes; the terrain is covered in black volcanic gravel, and the hardy plants adapted to this environment showcase the powerful beauty of nature. It is a popular spot for many visitors looking for light nature walks and hiking rather than intense climbing.
The climbing paths of the Gotemba route have been developed over time to improve accessibility for climbers. Historically, the area saw significant development to facilitate movement for travelers. The landscape itself is a testament to the geological history of the region, shaped heavily by volcanic activity. The dramatic terrain, particularly the traces left by the Hoei eruption, serves as a striking reminder of the dynamic volcanic history of Mt. Fuji.

The most striking feature of Gotemba Gu Shingo-gome is its unique vegetation and topography. Because the tree line is lower here than at other parts of the mountain, the view is wide and open, with very few trees. The ground is covered in black volcanic gravel, creating a stark, powerful landscape. A major highlight is the "Fuji Thistle" (Fuji Azami), which blooms from late July to late August. These beautiful purple flowers are significantly larger than standard thistles, creating a breathtaking sight. You can also observe other resilient plants like Ontade and Itadori thriving in this harsh environment.
Access to Gotemba Gu Shingo-gome is limited to the period when the Mt. Fuji Skyline (Prefectural Road 152) is open. Generally, the accessible season runs from late April to early November; the road is closed during winter due to snow. The best time to visit is during the summer (July–August) when the flora is in full bloom. Visiting during the bright daylight hours allows you to clearly see the contrast between the majestic presence of Mt. Fuji and the delicate alpine plants at your feet.

You can enjoy high-altitude nature walks and hiking without needing to be an expert climber. A
