The Goshono Site is a significant settlement hub that flourished during the latter half of the mid-Jomon period (approximately 5,000 to 4,200 years ago). This expansive archaeological site features pit dwellings, earthen mounds, and stone arrangements spread across a long, narrow plateau and eastern hilly terrain. Beyond being a mere residential area, this site is believed to have evolved into a vital "ritual center" for ceremonial practices. One of the most captivating features is the ability to use the "Goshono Site Guide App," which utilizes digital technology to let visitors experience the invisible landscapes of the past through VR (Virtual Reality) and AR (Augmented Reality).
The site is located at the southern edge of the "Cylindrical Pottery Culture" zone, which spans from northern Tohoku to southern Hokkaido. Around 4,800 years ago, a circular settlement was formed, characterized by pit dwellings surrounding central burial sites and stone arrangements. Over time, the settlement split into eastern and western sections, gradually transitioning from a residential area into a specialized site for rituals. This evolution provides crucial historical insight into how Jomon society transitioned from distinct living spaces to dedicated ceremonial grounds.
The primary attraction is the reconstruction of "earthen-roof buildings" and "post-hole buildings" based on archaeological findings. The earthen-roof buildings, in particular, have been refined through experimental reconstruction and firing tests to accurately reflect how wood and soil were used to create shelter. As some areas of the site do not have permanent signage, using the guide app or a tablet device is highly recommended to visualize the topography and the structural layout of the ancient ruins in 3D.
Guided tours within the site park are held on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays from late April through the end of November. While the scenery changes with the seasons, the period of stable weather is ideal for observing the historical structures and reconstructions. Guided sessions are typically scheduled six times a day, allowing visitors to learn about the site throughout the morning and afternoon.
The site offers rich digital experiences. At the Goshono Jomon Museum, you can borrow tablet devices equipped with the "Goshono Site Guide App," which utilizes VR, AR, and drone footage. This allows you to overlay the ancient dwellings and daily life scenes onto the current landscape. Seeing the reconstructed pit dwellings and post-hole buildings in person provides a tangible connection to the architectural techniques and lifestyles of the Jomon era.
The site is located near the Mabuchi River, a landscape that has provided a rich environment for hunting, gathering, and fishing since ancient times. The surrounding area is a beautiful, nature-filled environment perfect for a relaxing stroll while enjoying the historical scenery.
Because the site covers a large area, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. If you wish to borrow a tablet for the guide app, you must present a valid form of identification (such as a health insurance card, driver's license, or student ID). It is also recommended to check the schedule in advance for guided tour availability.
