Goshikizuka Kofun is a prominent keyhole-shaped burial mound (zenpo-koen-fun) located on Mt. Goshiki in Tarumi Ward, Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture. Recognized as the largest kofun in the prefecture, it is designated as a National Historic Site. It holds a unique place in Japanese archaeology as the first site in the country to undergo a 10-year restoration project starting in 1965, successfully recreating the appearance of the Kofun period. Today, it operates as an open-air museum where visitors can truly experience the atmosphere of ancient Japan.
The mound is estimated to have been constructed during the mid-Kofun period, roughly between the late 4th and early 5th centuries. The site is rich in cultural heritage, with many excavated items—including Haniwa (terracotta figures) and pottery—designated as National Important Cultural Properties or Kobe City Tangible Cultural Properties. As the first site in Japan to undergo systematic restoration, it remains a cornerstone of Japanese archaeological study.
Visitors can explore various artifacts that reveal the daily lives and rituals of ancient people. A major highlight is the collection of Haniwa, pottery, stone tools, and jewelry. Notably, 80 items among the exhibits are designated as National Important Cultural Properties, allowing for a close-up look at high-value historical treasures. Additionally, the site features an educational theater where the characters 'Goshiki-maro' and 'Tarumi-ko' serve as navigators, providing an engaging and easy-to-understand explanation of the ancient construction processes.

Goshikizuka Kofun is situated near Oji Park and other historical areas in Kobe. The surrounding region is dotted with facilities that convey local history and culture, making it an excellent base for a historical exploration tour. It also maintains good accessibility to other major tourist areas within Kobe city.
Since much of the site involves walking around the exterior of the burial mound, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Inside the exhibition halls, please observe strict museum etiquette and refrain from touching the artifacts to protect these precious archaeological resources.
