Goshikinuma refers to a group of more than 30 small lakes and ponds located on the north side of Mt. Bandai in Kitashiobara Village, Fukushima Prefecture. Situated within the Bandai-Azuma Skyline/Bandai-Asahi National Park, the area possesses a unique landscape shaped by volcanic activity. The most striking feature is the distinct color of each lake. Due to the volcanic water quality and the influence of aquatic plants and algae, the lakes display a diverse range of hues, including deep green, vibrant red, and brilliant blue. This rich variety of colors is the origin of the name 'Goshikinuma' (Five-Colored Ponds).
The formation of Goshikinura is deeply connected to the eruption of Mt. Bandai on July 15, 1888. This eruption caused a massive landslide on the north side of the mountain, resulting in debris flows that blocked rivers and created hundreds of small lakes and ponds. While the area was once a rugged and desolate landscape, the foundation for its current status as a scenic destination was laid by Genmu Endo, who invested his private resources into extensive reforestation. Today, it has developed into a premier destination for enjoying the natural environment.

Goshikinuma features several lakes where you can observe breathtaking natural colors. Notable examples include 'Rurinuma,' famous for its stunning cobalt blue tones; 'Bishamonnuma,' which offers a spectacular view of Mt. Bandai; and 'Bentennuma,' where aquatic plants create beautiful patterns on the water's surface. As you walk along the nature trails (trekking courses), you can enjoy the shifting colors of the lakes and the surrounding scenery with every step.
Goshikinuma can be enjoyed throughout the year, though the landscape changes beautifully with each season. The nature trails are primarily intended for use during daylight hours. We recommend observing how the light hits the water at different times of the day and throughout the seasons, as this significantly changes the appearance of the lake colors. Since these are established nature paths, visiting during bright daylight hours is most common.

The primary activity here is trekking along the well-maintained nature trails. Starting from the Goshikinuma entrance, you can follow a course that passes through Bishamonnuma, Akanuma, Mudoro-numa, Ryuma, Bentennuma, Rurinuma, Aonuma, and Yanuma (a total loop of approximately 4km). The walk takes about 1.5 hours. While the paths are well-maintained, please be prepared for slight changes in terrain as you are walking through a natural environment.
The area around Goshikinuma is developed as the 'Urabandai Highland,' a popular destination for many tourists. Nearby attractions include the Mt. Bandai Eruption Memorial Museum, the Morohashi Museum of Modern Art, and the La S Pasha Urabandai hot spring facility. You can also find leisure facilities like the Urabandai Ski Resort and Urabandai Nekoma Ski Resort. The surrounding area is rich in nature, with other lakes like Lake Hibara also scattered nearby.

When walking the nature trails, comfortable walking shoes and appropriate clothing are essential. Although the paths are maintained, please prepare for sudden changes in weather. Parking is available near the Goshikinuma entrance and the Urabandai-Kogen Station bus stop. To protect the environment, please remember to take all your trash home with you and respect the local flora and fauna.
