Gosen City is renowned as one of the leading tulip-producing regions in Niigata Prefecture. To showcase the beauty of their harvest, the city hosts the annual "Tulip Festival" starting in mid-April. The sight of countless colorful tulips blooming across the vast fields creates a breathtaking landscape that looks as if a vibrant carpet of color has been spread across the earth.
Tulip cultivation in this region is deeply rooted in unique local traditions. A vital part of the process involves "flower picking" (picking the blooms just before they wither) to ensure the bulbs store enough nutrients for the next season. This cycle is a quintessential part of the local spring culture. Additionally, to maintain soil health and prevent disease, the cultivation follows a rotation system. Because the soil cannot be used for the same crops consecutively, the festival venue shifts every few years—currently rotating through areas like the Suboto and Ipponsugi districts—to ensure a sustainable 5-year cycle.
The greatest draw is the sheer scale of the tulip clusters. A diverse palette of red, yellow, pink, and white creates a constantly changing scenery as the season progresses. During the Tulip Festival, the area is filled with a lively, festive atmosphere. Visitors can also observe the intersection of nature and traditional agricultural techniques, such as the specific methods used to cultivate high-quality bulbs.
The peak season for the tulip fields is from mid-April to late April. We highly recommend timing your visit to coincide with the Tulip Festival. For the best photography, visit during the morning when the light is soft, or during the bright midday hours when the colors appear most vivid. Please note that blooming status can vary each year depending on the weather, so checking the latest bloom reports is advised.

Since you will be walking through large outdoor areas, comfortable clothing and walking shoes are highly recommended, as paths may be unpaved or uneven. Please be mindful that these fields are active agricultural sites; respect the rules and stay on designated paths to avoid damaging the flowers or the bulbs being nurtured.
