Gomado-yama Ajisai-en is a breathtaking natural spot located in Takakami Town, Niigata Prefecture, featuring approximately 30,000 hydrangeas. Situated near the summit of Mt. Gomado at an elevation of 274 meters, the garden is planted with various species, including the striking lacecap hydrangea (Gaku-ajisai). Spanning an area of approximately 39,520 square meters, the garden creates a vivid, colorful landscape that defines the early summer season.
The area is deeply integrated with the natural environment of Mt. Gomado, serving as a place where visitors can coexist with nature. It has long been a cherished location for observing the seasonal changes of local flora. The annual 'Ajisai Matsuri' (Hydrangea Festival) held during early summer is a significant local event, allowing visitors to experience the cultural rhythm of the region through its natural beauty.
The primary draw is the sea of approximately 30,000 hydrangeas spreading across the summit area. The peak blooming season is typically from mid-June to July. During this time, the 'Gomado-yama Yuda-kami Onsen Ajisai Matsuri' is held, drawing many visitors to the area. For the best experience, visit during the bright daylight hours to see the vivid colors of the hydrangeas in their full brilliance. The area remains open until 22:00, allowing you to experience the changing atmosphere of the mountain even into the evening.
Reaching the summit involves a scenic hike of approximately 40 minutes on foot from the trailhead. This provides a wonderful opportunity for light hiking and nature observation. The journey allows you to immerse yourself in the forest environment before reaching the observation area at the summit, where you can enjoy the seasonal flowers alongside the expansive view of the Echoli Plain below.
