The Goishi Coast is a part of the Sanriku Fukko National Park, situated on the Misaki Peninsula in Ofunato City, Iwate Prefecture. The coastline is defined by its namesake, the "Goishi" (Go stones), which refers to the unique landscape of flat, black stones (blackaceous mudstone) scattered across the shore. This area, characterized by steep cliffs of a rias coastline and dynamic waves, is designated as a national scenic spot and a natural monument. The coastline is also lined with lush pine forests, creating a serene and beautiful natural environment.
This region possesses a fascinating geological history. The unique landscape was formed by the movement of the seafloor plates and crustal changes approximately 130 million years ago, resulting in the deposition of blackaceous mudstone. The sound of waves crashing against Kaminari-iwa (Thunder Rock) is so distinctive that it has been designated as one of the "100 Soundscapes of Japan," highlighting its deep cultural and natural value. Additionally, the area holds local significance as the site of a monument for the famous singer Kenji Niiuma, whose hit song "Omoide Misaki" is deeply connected to the local memory.
The Goishi Coast offers a variety of natural geological formations. A standout experience is the "Anatooshi-i" sea cave, which can only be accessed by boat. Watching a skilled boatman navigate through the narrow rock opening is a truly unique adventure. Other notable sights include "Chiyojima," where seawater sprays into the air through air pressure, "Kaminari-iwa" (Thunder Rock), where the waves sound like thunder, and "Kinchaku-iwa" (Drawstring Bag Rock), which features a gentle, rounded shape. Visitors can also enjoy the beautiful views from the well-maintained walking paths along the coast.
The best way to experience the Goishi Coast is via the Anatooshi boat tour, which typically operates from June to November. The summer months are particularly wonderful, offering a refreshing sea breeze and a lively atmosphere. In spring, the surrounding area is beautified by blooming cherry blossoms, providing a different palette of natural colors. For sightseeing, daytime offers the best visibility for seeing the intricate rock formations, but a quiet stroll is also highly recommended to listen to the rhythmic sounds of the waves.
The highlight of the area is the cruise on the small sightseeing boat, "Anatooshi-sen." The route takes you from Goishi-hama, past Kaminari-iwa and Kinchaku-iwa, culminating in the thrilling passage through the Anatooshi sea cave. The tour lasts approximately 40 minutes and offers an up-close look at the geological wonders. Beyond boating, visitors can enjoy trekking along the coastal paths, nature observation, or even staying overnight at nearby campsites to fully immerse themselves in the natural environment.
