Godzilla Rock is a natural formation located within the Shiotsezaki Geosite of the Oga-Ogata Geopark on the southern side of the Oga Peninsula in Akita Prefecture. True to its name, the silhouette of the rock strikingly resembles the legendary monster, Godzilla. The formation is composed of volcanic breccia (volcanic tuff) created by volcanic activity approximately 30 million years ago, and has been sculpted into its unique shape by the relentless forces of wind and waves over many years. The coastline of the Oga Peninsula offers a dynamic and powerful landscape shaped by nature.
The area is part of the Shiotsezaki Geosite within the Oga Peninsula/Ogata Geopark. This region is home to several other unique rock formations that possess names inspired by their shapes, such as "Godzilla's Tail Rock," "Gamera Rock," "Twin Rocks," and "Hokakugashima." These sites are registered as part of Japan's most beautiful rock formations, representing a fusion of geological history and cultural value. The geological foundation of volcanic breccia is what allows for such striking and diverse natural sculptures.
The absolute highlight is the evening hour. When the setting sun aligns with the mouth of the rock, it creates the illusion of Godzilla breathing fire. This phenomenon, known as the "Fire-Breathing Godzilla," attracts many photography enthusiasts from around the world. The timing when the sunset clouds align with the mouth is a once-in-a-lifetime spectacle. While visiting, you can also observe other nearby formations, such as the rock resembling Godzilla's tail or Gamera Rock, to see the diverse geological changes along the coastline.
The most significant time to visit is during the late afternoon and evening. Because the appearance of the rock changes based on the position of the sun and clouds, it is highly recommended to visit shortly before and after sunset. April and October are considered the best months to visit, as the light and sky conditions make it easiest to capture the most vivid and clear silhouette of the "Godora" shape.
The primary activity here is landscape photography. Capturing the moment the sun enters the mouth of the rock is a unique experience found only here. You can also enjoy a stroll along the coast to observe the various other geologically significant rocks like Gamera Rock, helping you understand the unique geography of the region.
The Oga Peninsula, where Godzilla Rock is located, holds high value as a Geopark. The surrounding area also features relaxing destinations such as Oga Onsenkyo (hot spring villages). As you move along the coastal routes, you can discover various other strange rock formations scattered throughout the Shiotsezaki Geosite.
As this is a coastal area, the terrain can be uneven or windy. We recommend wearing sturdy, walking shoes. If you are visiting for sunset photography, be sure to check the exact sunset time in advance.
