"Gion Odori" is a traditional dance performance held annually from November 1st to November 10th in the Gion Higashi district of Kyoto. This performance serves as a showcase for the local Geiko and Maiko to display their refined skills. It is uniquely significant as the only major performance held during the autumn season among Kyoto's many flower districts. Against the backdrop of Kyoto's deep autumn colors, you can experience "living art" through the graceful movements and stunning kimono worn by the performers.
The history of this performance dates back to 1952. Hosted by the Gion Higashi Kabukai, it has been carefully preserved as a venue for both the succession of traditional dance and the training of Geiko and Maiko. While maintaining the classical forms of Kyoto's dance traditions, the event incorporates sophisticated modern touches to continue captivating audiences both domestically and internationally. It plays a vital role in communicating the seasonal essence and culture of Kyoto.
The main highlight is the medley of Nagauta and Kiyomoto dances, featuring original scripts created for each performance. There are two shows per day: the first at 13:30 and the second at 16:00.
