Gifu Castle is a historic fortress located at the summit of Mt. Kinka, the iconic symbol of Gifu City. Originally known as Inabayama Castle, the name was changed to "Gifu" after Oda Nobunaga established his base here. Situated at an altitude of 329m, the castle provides a commanding view of the flowing Nagara River below, with the majestic Ena Mountains to the east, the Japanese Alps to the north, and the Ibuki Mountains to the west. The current structure features a reinforced concrete keep built during the reconstruction in 1956, which serves as a popular observation deck for visitors. The scenery, surrounded by seasonal natural beauty, offers a unique blend of history and nature.
The history of Gifu Castle is profound, beginning with a fort established by Nikaido Tadatsune during the Kamakura period. During the Sengoku period, the site was ruled by Saito Dosan of Mino, before Oda Nobunaga conquered Inabayama Castle and renamed it "Gifu Castle." Nobunaga used this site as a strategic center for national unification and implemented policies like "Rakuichi Rakuza" (free markets) in the castle town. The castle fell during the unrest surrounding the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600 and was subsequently abandoned. The current keep was reconstructed in 1956 by the Gifu Castle Reconstruction League, serving as an important monument to Nobunaga's legacy. The surrounding Mt. Kinka area was designated as a National Historic Site in 2011.
The greatest draw of Gifu Castle is the sweeping panoramic view from the top floor of the castle keep.
