Genkyu Rakurakuen is a beautiful former daimyo garden located in Hikone City, Shiga Prefecture, and is officially designated as a National Scenic Spot. The garden is composed of two distinct areas with different atmospheres: "Genkyu-en" and "Rakurakuen." Centered around a vast pond, the landscape utilizes the chisen-kaiyu-shiki (stroll-style) technique, featuring hills and water features that embody the essence of traditional Japanese garden aesthetics alongside historic architecture.
The history of this garden dates back to the early Edo period, having been meticulously maintained by the successive lords of the Hikone Clan. Genkyu-en is characterized by its structures arranged around the pond, designed to evoke famous vistas such as the Omi Hakkei (Eight Views of Omi). Rakurakuen, which served as the residence for the daimyo, preserves exquisite Sukiya-zukuri architectural styles. These historical roots make the garden much more than a mere landscape; it is a precious site that conveys the politics and culture of that era.
The garden features several significant structures and landscapes. Centered around the large pond known as "Gyoyaku-sho," the garden includes islands and hills. Along the water's edge, buildings such as "Rinchi-kaku" and "Hakkei-tei" are positioned to appear as if they are floating, creating a seamless integration between the architecture and the water. The design, which mimics the famous Omi Hakkei landscapes, showcases a sophisticated fusion of natural elements and man-made artistry.
The scenery changes beautifully with each season. In early summer, the fragrance of lotus flowers and irises fills the air. In September, the garden hosts the "Listening to the Insects' Song at Genkyu-en" event, which includes beautiful night-time illuminations. Observing the garden under the moonlight and listening to the sounds of insects offers a serene and completely different atmosphere compared to daytime visits. You can observe the changing expressions of the plants and water throughout the year.
At the "Hosho-dai" pavilion, you can enjoy traditional matcha tea. Savoring a bowl of matcha while gazing out at the tranquil garden scenery from within a historic building is a truly special experience. This moment of rest in a space perfectly harmonized with nature provides visitors with a sense of profound peace and relaxation.
The garden is located northeast of Hikone Castle, making it a perfect addition to a sightseeing itinerary for Hikone Castle. The surrounding area retains the nostalgic atmosphere of a castle town (jokamachi), with historic streets nearby. It is highly recommended to visit both the castle and the garden in a single tour.
