Genbi Gorge is a beautiful valley located along the midstream of the Pai River in Ichinoseki, Iwate Prefecture. The landscape is defined by the natural erosion caused by the river flowing from Mt. Kurikoma, creating a spectacular 2km stretch of unique rock formations, deep pools, and waterfalls. As a renowned scenic spot, visitors can enjoy walking along the riverside paths to witness the dynamic movement of water through jagged rocks and steep cliffs.
Genbi Gorge was designated as a National Scenic Spot and Natural Monument on September 5, 1927. It has long been cherished as a place of natural beauty. A notable structure in the area is the Chosha Taki Bridge. Records suggest that when it was constructed in 1939, bamboo was used for its framework, and the bridge was later registered as a Tangible Cultural Property in 1999.
The greatest draw is the dynamic topography sculpted by nature. A particularly fascinating geological feature is the 'potholes' (natural basins) created by pebbles swirling in the water currents, which have smoothed the bedrock into perfect circular shapes. The area is well-equipped with walking paths and rest areas, allowing visitors to experience the varying moods of the river, from the calm downstream sections to the more rugged upstream areas.
Genbi Gorge offers different natural vistas depending on the season. In spring, the fresh greenery of the surrounding trees adds vibrant color to the riverside landscape. There are two main walking routes: a gentle 30-minute loop around the downstream area, and a more adventurous 70-minute trek toward the upstream section to feel the raw power of nature. We recommend visiting during bright daylight hours, as the sunlight changes the appearance of the rock faces and the color of the water.
The quintessential experience at Genbi Gorge is the famous 'Kakkou Dango' (Flying Dumplings). This unique tradition involves placing money in a small wooden hut and striking a wooden mallet to make a sound. In response, a basket suspended by a cable is sent from the shop on the opposite side of the river. The sight of the basket carrying the delicious dumplings and tea across the gorge is a wonderful photo opportunity and a favorite among tourists.
There are several other sightseeing spots near Genbi Gorge. For instance, Geibikei Gorge, also located in Ichinoseki, is another famous scenic valley that is highly recommended for a combined itinerary. There are also roadside stations (Michi-no-Eki) nearby, making it easy to stop for local specialties during your travels.
