The Genbei River is a waterway approximately 1.5 km long flowing through Mishima City, Shizuoka Prefecture. Its origin lies in the Komahama Pond within Rakuju-en, where the spring waters of Mount Fuji gather. While it has a history as an agricultural irrigation canal, it is now a cherished symbol of Mishima's identity as the 'City of Water.' This beautiful waterfront space is meticulously preserved through the collaborative efforts of local citizens, the government, and NPOs. The site is recognized by the Ministry of the Environment as one of the '100 Best Waters of Japan' and by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries as one of the 'Best Canals in Japan.' Its harmonious blend of nature and urban design has even earned a design award from the Japan Society of Civil Engineers.
The history of this area is deeply rooted in the past. The river is named after Terao Genbei, a powerful local figure during the Muromachi period, who is said to have excavated the waterway for irrigation. In earlier times, it was an essential part of daily life; for example, tin boats were once used to cool vegetables in the water. During the period of rapid economic growth, the river faced challenges such as water quality degradation and decreased volume due to urbanization. However, since around 1990, the 'Genbei River Water Environment Improvement Project' has been underway. This initiative transitioned the river from concrete-lined banks to a 'nature-oriented' design, successfully restoring the ecosystem and creating the beautiful landscape seen today.

The Genbei River is adorned by 12 distinct bridges, each offering a unique character. You can experience the historical atmosphere at 'Tokinane Bridge' or the nostalgic charm of 'Genbei Bridge.' A well-maintained walking path runs along the river, offering breathtaking views of Mount Fuji reflected on the water and the lush surrounding vegetation. The river is a thriving habitat for rare plants like Lysimachia nummularia and Veronica beccabunga, as well as various aquatic life including medaka (Japanese rice fish). The flow of water toward the Nakago Hot Water Pond also continues to play a vital role in supporting local agriculture.
You can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Genbei River throughout the year. The view is particularly spectacular during clear, sunny days when the transparency of the spring water and the reflection of Mount Fuji are at their most brilliant. Visitors can observe the changing seasonal flora and the movement of aquatic life. In the evening, the gentle sound of the flowing water combined with the soft city lights creates a calm, meditative atmosphere quite different from the daytime.

While there are no formal paid programs, the greatest pleasure is simply walking the riverside paths. The area is a hub for NPO activities focused on environmental research and conservation, allowing visitors to feel the process of nature's regeneration through the landscape. You can enjoy observing diverse plants and animals during your stroll or relax at nearby cafes and restaurants while listening to the soothing sounds of the water.
The area around the Genbei River is dotted with spots that reflect the rich culture of Mishima. At 'Rakuju-en,' the river's source, you can explore ponds fed by Mount Fuji's spring water and enjoy a deep immersion in nature. The river is easily accessible from Mishima Station, making it a perfect stop during a day trip. Following the route toward the Nakago Hot Water Pond provides a deeper insight into the relationship between local agriculture and water.

For a comfortable experience, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. While the paths are well-maintained, they are part of a natural environment, so practical clothing is best.
