Gassan Ski Resort is located near Ubogatake, a sub-peak of Mount Gassan in Nishikawa Town, Yamagata Prefecture. It features a very rare operating schedule, staying open from early April through late July, long after typical ski resorts have closed for the season. This is possible due to the massive snowfall in this region, which leaves abundant remaining snow well into the warmer months. Situated at a high altitude of 1,600m, it is renowned as a mecca for summer skiing. Beyond skiing and snowboarding, the resort serves as a vital base for various outdoor activities, including access to mountain climbing trails.
Mount Gassan is a significant topographical landmark in this region. The resort, operated by Gassan Kanko Kaihatsu Co., Ltd., focuses on utilizing the unique natural environment. While lift operations stop during the heavy winter months, a unique culture of 'skiing on remaining snow' has taken root during the spring and summer. The area is also home to historic hot spring areas like Gassan Shizu Onsen, where visitors can experience the coexistence of rugged nature and traditional hot spring culture.

Because of its high elevation, you can enjoy breathtaking views of Lake Gassan on clear days. The terrain includes various levels: the Ubosawa Hut area for beginners, the Ubogatake area and large slopes for intermediate skiers, and the Ushikubi area for advanced riders. As the season progresses and snow decreases, the scenery near the lift stations changes beautifully. The Shimizu Course, which passes through a beech forest at the bottom of the mountain, often remains open until around Golden Week, offering a wonderful way to witness the changing seasons.
Gassan Ski Resort transforms significantly with the seasons. From April to May, visitors can enjoy the process of spring skiing as the snow texture evolves. From June to July, the focus shifts toward hiking access and summer skiing. Lift operations are generally from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, but please note that times may change based on the season, weather, or snow conditions; checking ahead is highly recommended. There are no night-skiing facilities, so activities are centered around daylight hours.

The primary activities are skiing and snowboarding from spring through summer. You can use T-bars for downhill runs or pair lifts for mountain transport. From mid-June, the lifts become a popular way to access the hiking trails for Mount Gassan. While lifts do not run in the winter, the area is known for backcountry skiing and snowmobiling. Simply taking the lift to the high altitude to enjoy the panoramic views is an experience in itself.
Various lodges and mountain huts are scattered near the base of the resort. Additionally, a short drive down the mountain leads to Gassan Shizu Onsen, a collection of traditional inns with hot spring facilities. To make your trip more fulfilling, we recommend combining your outdoor activities with a stay at a local ryokan or visiting nearby spots like Lake Gassan.
Proper gear for the season is essential. During spring skiing, temperatures can rise, so bring clothing that allows you to adjust to temperature changes (such as light shirts). When using the lift, you must remove your skis/snowboard and carry them by hand. Some lifts may have equipment holders. Also, be mindful of your footwear, as the path from the parking lot to the lift station may be paved with concrete. When hiking or skiing, please strictly follow all local mountain rules and safety guidelines.
