The Gassan Lake Fountain (Gassan Lake Grand Fountain) is a landmark located in Lake Gassan within Nishikawa Town, Yamagata Prefecture. This fountain was established alongside the completion of the Sagae Dam to symbolize the abundance of water resources in Nishikawa Town. For instance, it relates to the height of the Sagae Dam (112m) and the 112 households that were relocated due to the dam's construction. More than just a tourist attraction, it serves as a cultural monument representing the town's respect for its water resources and its way of life alongside nature.
The greatest thrill is watching the water soar high into the sky. Equipped with a central main nozzle and eight oscillating diffusion nozzles, the fountain features different spray patterns for each season. These changes ensure that the landscape feels fresh and different every time you visit. Additionally, during certain periods, the fountain may be illuminated at night, offering a completely different atmosphere from the daytime. The fountain operates from April to November. Each season features a specific name and pattern, such as 'Spring Dance,' 'Summer Dance,' and 'Autumn Dance,' designed to match the atmosphere of the season. The water is sprayed multiple times a day, typically once every hour. Because it does not run continuously, it is highly recommended to check the schedule in advance to plan your visit.
