Garyu Park is a vast urban park located in Suzaka City, Nagano Prefecture. The park was designed and constructed by Seiroku Honda, Japan's first Doctor of Forestry. The centerpiece of the park is Ryugaike Pond, surrounded by approximately 600 cherry trees, a site officially selected as one of the "100 Famous Cherry Blossom Spots in Japan." The landscape is further enhanced by exquisite pine trees, which are also recognized as one of the "100 Most Beautiful Pine Trees in Japan," creating a harmonious view of nature and artful design. The backdrop of Mount Garyu provides a stunning natural setting that changes with every season.
The history of the park dates back to its construction in the early Showa era. The designer, Seiroku Honda, is a renowned figure who also contributed to the design of Meiji Jingu and Hibiya Park. The construction of this park served a significant social purpose during the Great Depression, acting as a public works project to provide employment for workers in the silk reeling industry, which was the primary industry of Suzaka at the time. This makes the park not just a place for recreation, but a site where local history and culture are deeply etched. The landscape is a sophisticated blend of natural beauty and human-led design.
The park offers a diverse range of scenery throughout the year. In spring, the approximately 600 cherry trees bloom in full glory around the pond. Autumn brings vibrant foliage, summer offers lush greenery, and winter provides a serene, snow-covered landscape. The view of the famous pine trees reflecting in the water, set against the backdrop of mountains such as Mt. Kuroki, Mt. Myoko, and Mt. Bandai, is a signature feature. Additionally, the park houses the Suzaka City Zoo, where visitors can see animals like kangaroos and capybaras. Visitors can also enjoy rowing or pedal boating on Ryugaike Pond.
Spring (mid-to-late April) is the most popular time to visit when the cherry blossom tunnels created by the Yoshino cherry trees are at their peak. Summer is perfect for family outings amidst lush greenery, while autumn is ideal for viewing the changing colors of the leaves. Winter offers a quiet, contemplative atmosphere with snow-covered landscapes. For the best experience, we recommend visiting during daylight hours to enjoy the zoo and boat activities.
There are many ways to connect with nature here. You can enjoy a relaxing ride on a rowing boat or a pedal boat on Ryugaike Pond (please note that boat services are unavailable from December to March). At the Suzaka City Zoo, you can enjoy close encounters with various animals. The park also features well-maintained playgrounds and open spaces, making it a great place for children to run around. For those seeking more adventure, hiking the trails of Mount Garyu offers a wonderful way to experience the local landscape.
The area surrounding the park is rich in culture and history. Nearby, you can find the Chiaki Koike Collection World Folklore Doll Museum and the Suzaka Print Museum (Unichi Hiratsuka Print Museum) to experience local art. Comfortable clothing and walking shoes are highly recommended, especially if you plan to hike or use the boats. Please note that cash is required for zoo entrance fees and boat rentals. While there is parking available, it can become very crowded during the cherry blossom season; using public transportation is encouraged when possible.
