Ganmon, located in Shika Town, Ishikawa Prefecture, is a spectacular coastal landscape sculpted by the relentless waves of the Sea of Japan. The area is defined by its magnificent natural rock formations, including a large sea cave (Dongmen) through which you can view the vast horizon. By taking a sightseeing boat, you can experience the scale of these geological wonders up close—views that are impossible to fully appreciate from the land. It is a place where you can truly feel one with the nature of the Noto Peninsula.
The beauty of this landscape has been celebrated for centuries. In 1853, it was even featured in the masterpiece 'Rokujuyushu Meisho Zue' by the legendary ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Hiroshige. The area is steeped in local lore; at the southern end lies Fura Port, home to the historic Fura Lighthouse, one of Japan's oldest wooden Western-style lighthouses. To the north, legends tell of 'Yoshitsune's Hidden Boat,' a tale involving the legendary warrior Minamoto no Yoshitsune. The area's dramatic cliffs, such as the 'Yase Cliffs,' have also served as settings for films, including 'Zero Focus,' adding a layer of cinematic history to the scenery.
The highlights of the sightseeing cruise include the towering 'Taka-no-su Rock' and the uniquely patterned 'Goban-jima' (Checkerboard Island). These dynamic geological features are best viewed from the water. During the cruise, you may even see Black-tailed gulls flying close to the boat. Depending on the timing, the captain may provide insights into the Noto Peninsula's geography. A standout experience is looking out through the natural sea cave toward the horizon, which offers a breathtaking view of the sunset during the late afternoon.
The sightseeing boats generally operate from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. For the most magical experience, visit during the late afternoon to witness the sun setting over the horizon through the sea cave. Please note that the cruise service is typically closed for the winter season from late November to mid-March. Additionally, cruises may be canceled due to high winds or rough sea conditions, so it is highly recommended to check the weather and operational status before your visit.
The primary activity is the Noto Kando Sightseeing Boat cruise, which offers views of the mountains and sea, including Mt. Takatsume. After your cruise, enjoy the local flavors at the 'Ganmon CRUISE & SHOP.' You can try seasonal treats like the 'Sea Salt Soft Serve Ice Cream,' homemade lemonade, or the famous Noto specialty, 'Hippari-mochi.' The shop also sells local products such as Noto soy sauce, Nodoguro (black throat sole) delicacies, and original sightseeing boat merchandise.
The area around the cruise route is dotted with historical landmarks. From the historic Fura Lighthouse in the south to the legendary sites in the north, there is much to explore. The dramatic cliffs that have inspired filmmakers are part of this rich landscape. The site is easily accessible by car, with a large free parking lot available for visitors.
