Fushimi Momoyama Castle (Fushimi Castle) is a historic site located in Fushimi Ward, Kyoto. The site carries a deep legacy, once shaped by the legendary Toyotomi Hideyoshi and later by Tokugawa Ieyasu. The current landscape is centered around a grand replica keep located within the Fushimi Momoyama Castle Sports Park, which was built on the site of the former "Fushimi Momoyama Castle Castle Land" amusement park. While the keep is a modern reinforced concrete structure rather than an original ancient building, its imposing presence makes it a beloved local landmark and a striking symbol of the area.
The history of Fushimi Castle is divided into two major eras: the Toyotomi and the Tokugawa periods. The original Fushimi Castle, built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi on Mount Shigetsu in 1592, was known for its magnificent and luxurious style. Following the Battle of Sekigahara, the castle was destroyed and later rebuilt under the direction of Tokugawa Ieyasu. The area is also known as "Momoyama" (Peach Mountain) because peach trees were planted around the castle during the Genroku era, which gave rise to the current name, Fushimi Momoyama. Furthermore, parts of the castle grounds are managed by the Imperial Household Agency as the Fushimi Momoyama Imperial Mausolea, adding a layer of profound historical and cultural significance to the area.
The most striking feature is the replica keep located within the park. Standing five stories and six floors high, the structure retains the grand scale of the original castle's silhouette, a legacy from its time as an amusement park attraction. Please note that the interior of the keep is currently closed to the public due to seismic safety regulations; however, viewing the exterior provides a wonderful sense of the castle's former scale. The surrounding area, including the Fushimi Momoyama Imperial Mausolea, offers a unique blend of castle history and imperial cultural heritage.
The scenery around Fushimi Momoyama Castle changes beautifully with the seasons. Spring (March to April) is a particularly wonderful time to visit to see the area in bloom. Autumn (October to November) is also highly recommended to experience the changing colors of the landscape. Since the site is a well-maintained public park, visiting during daylight hours allows for the best views of the impressive castle tower and its surroundings.
As the site is now a public sports park, the primary activity is enjoying a leisurely stroll while admiring the castle's architecture. After the former amusement park closed, the area became a peaceful space for locals and visitors to relax. While you cannot enter the interior of the keep, you can walk through the grounds and use your imagination to visualize the layout and grandeur of the original fortress.
The area surrounding Fushimi Momoyama Castle is steeped in history. Nearby, you can explore the Fushimi Momoyama Imperial Mausolea, a site of significant historical research. Additionally, the wider Fushimi area is famous for its traditional sake brewing industry, making this a perfect stop on a cultural route exploring historic streetscapes and traditional Japanese-style architecture.
Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended for exploring the park. While the paths are well-maintained, please watch your step when walking near the historical ruins. If you use the parking facilities, cash may be required. As the area includes the sacred Fushimi Momoyama Imperial Mausolea, please maintain a quiet and respectful demeanor. Note that the interior of the castle tower is not accessible for tours, so please enjoy the view from the outside.
