Furepe Falls is a waterfall of exceptional natural beauty located within Shiretoko National Park in Hokkaido. The sight of water cascading directly from a sheer cliff into the Sea of Okhotsk is described as being as delicate and beautiful as 'Maiden's Tears.' A unique feature of this site is that even without a continuous river, water drips through the crevices of the cliffside, creating a striking landscape. This area is part of the Shiretoko National Park, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, where a strict and pristine natural environment is meticulously preserved. The landscape around Furepe Falls was shaped by geological shifts and the movement of water over time. The most iconic sight is the vertical descent of the water from the cliff into the sea. The main period when the nature trails are open for walking is from May to October. The primary activity is a nature walk along the established trail starting from the Shiretoko Nature Center. The walk takes approximately 20 minutes one way, offering a peaceful way to observe the waterfall and the unique topography of the coast. For a more in-depth experience, you can join a tour led by a professional nature guide, who can provide detailed explanations regarding the local geology and the surrounding ecosystem.
The Shiretoko Nature Center, which serves as the starting point for the trail, is located nearby, along with other famous spots like the Shiretoko Goko Lakes. The area is a hub for nature observation in the Shiretoko Peninsula. It is also easily accessible from the Utoro district, which serves as a major base for accommodation and sightseeing.
