Funaoka Castle Ruins Park, located in Shibata Town, Miyagi Prefecture, is a beautiful park where history and nature harmonize perfectly. Once the residence of the Shibata clan until the Meiji Restoration, it has become one of the most famous cherry blossom destinations in the Tohoku region. The park's greatest charm lies in its elevated location, offering spectacular views. From the summit, you can gaze out over the cityscape of Shibata Town, the distant Zao mountain range, and even the Pacific Ocean. It is celebrated as one of the '36 Scenic Views of Miyagi and Zao.'
The site served a crucial strategic role due to its geography. Situated at the confluence of the Shiroishi and Ara Rivers, it became a vital bottleneck for both land-based travel and river transport, leading to the construction of Funaoka Castle. Historically, the site is known as the former residence of the Shibata clan. The park preserves various symbols related to these historical events, making it a precious site for understanding the local heritage.
The park is structured into three main areas: the 'Honmaru' (inner sanctum) at the summit, the 'Ninomaru' (second enclosure) on the mid-slope, and the 'Sannomaru' (third enclosure) area near the main gate. The most iconic landmark is the 'Funaoka Peace Kannon Statue' standing at the summit. This 24-meter-tall statue was built through the private funds of a local resident to pray for the repose of his late wife and for world peace. Additionally, the 'Community Garden Hana-no-oka Shibata' near the summit offers a delightful way to enjoy seasonal flowers, including tulips and roses, providing a sense of healing and tranquility.
The park's character changes beautifully with the seasons. In spring (early to late April), the 'Shibata Cherry Blossom Festival' takes place, featuring approximately 1,000 cherry trees in full bloom. The view of the cherry blossom tunnels integrated with the Shiroishi River embankments is truly breathtaking. In autumn, the 'Miyagi Grand Chrysanthemum Exhibition' is held, showcasing exquisite floral displays. For the best experience, visit on a clear day during daylight hours to fully enjoy the panoramic view of the Zao mountain range and the Pacific Ocean.
Visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls through nature while feeling the weight of history. To make the climb easier, a slope car (available during specific periods) connects the parking area to the summit, allowing for smooth movement despite the elevation changes. The area around the Peace Kannon statue is a perfect spot for resting while taking in the vast scenery. The seasonal gardens are also excellent for photography. Walking through the terrain of the former castle grounds offers a unique experience of retracing history.
The area surrounding the park is rich in natural beauty, particularly near the Shiroishi River. Within Shibata Town, you can also visit facilities like the 'Sakura no Sato' tourism and local product center to learn more about local specialties and regional information.
