Fukuyama Castle is an early modern Japanese castle built in 1622 by Mizuno Katsunari. The complex features a five-story main keep (tenshu) along with seven triple turrets and 14 double turrets, all surrounded by a double moat system. The most striking feature is the iron plating covering the entire north face of the main keep—a unique defensive design found nowhere else in Japan. While the original keep was lost in the 1945 bombings, the current structure was reconstructed in 1966. Today, the site preserves precious original structures such as the Fushimi Yagura and Sujitetsu Go-mon gate, maintaining a profound historical atmosphere.
The castle was founded by Mizuno Katsunari, a high-ranking daimyo and cousin to Tokugawa Ieyasu. After moving from Yamato Koriyama, he spent approximately three years completing this fortification. The castle town culture also preserves traditions like the "Tondo" festivals. Although many buildings were lost during the Meiji era, several key structures remain. The current main keep serves as a symbol of Fukuyama City, representing both the political center of the former Fukuyama Domain and a modern cultural landmark.
There are many structures of high historical value to explore. First, the main keep with its iconic iron-plated north wall is a must-see. Second, the Fushimi Yagura, which is documented to have been moved from Fushimi Castle, is an extremely rare surviving original building. The Sujitetsu Go-mon, the main gate facing the inner sanctum, and the Kane Yagura (Bell Tower), which still rings four times a day, are also essential sights. Other notable structures include the Tsukimi Yagura (Moon Viewing Tower) for panoramic views, the Oyu-dono (Bath House) used by the lords, and the Kagami Yagura, which houses historical documents.
Fukuyama Castle offers different charms depending on when you visit. The night illuminations are particularly spectacular, as the lights cast a mystical glow over the castle walls and the surrounding cityscape. Please note that the road crossing the north side of the castle is closed to traffic from 23:00 to 06:00. Visiting during seasons when the historical architecture harmonizes with the surrounding nature provides a deeper, more immersive historical experience.
