Fuzhouen Garden was established to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the sister-city relationship between Naha City and Fuzhou City, Fujian Province, as well as the 70th anniversary of Naha's municipal system. It is the only authentic Chinese-style garden in Okinawa. The garden faithfully recreates the iconic 'Three Mountains, Two Pagodas, and One River' landscape of Fuzhou using traditional materials and techniques. The space is divided into three distinct conceptual areas—'Bright,' 'Calm,' and 'Elegant'—featuring a masterful arrangement of ponds, waterfalls, bridges, corridors, and rock formations that visitors often call 'walking art.'
The garden serves as a symbol of the deep friendship between Naha and Fuzhou. It is rooted in the history of the Kume Village (Kuninda) people, who have maintained strong ties with China since the Ryukyu Kingdom era. The architecture and scenery are designed to mirror the natural beauty of Fuzhou, serving as a hub for cultural exchange. Following a 2022 renovation, the garden now offers enhanced experiences, including enchanting night illuminations and various cultural events.
Every corner of the garden offers a meticulously crafted view. The ponds, waterfalls, and traditional structures like 'Ting' (pavilions) and corridors change expression depending on your perspective. The way the architecture reflects in the water is a hallmark of Chinese garden design. Additionally, the adjacent 'Kuninda Terrace' provides exhibitions on the history of the Ryukyu Kingdom and Kume Village, allowing visitors to visually understand the intersection of Okinawan and Chinese cultures.
The garden presents a completely different face depending on the time of day. During the day, you can enjoy the vibrant colors of the plants and stone arrangements under the sunlight. At night (18:00–21:00), the garden is illuminated, creating a mystical and dreamlike atmosphere. Depending on the season, you may also experience cultural events such as Lunar New Year celebrations or live performances of Ryukyu classical music.
Visitors can enjoy peaceful strolls and photography throughout the grounds. At the adjacent Kuninda Terrace, you can explore historical exhibits or relax at the observation terrace. The restaurant offers a variety of international fusion cuisine with a focus on Chinese flavors, allowing you to dine while gazing at the beautiful garden scenery. The space also hosts seasonal music events, blending the sounds of culture with the serenity of the garden.
Located in central Naha, Fuzhouen Garden is easily accessible from major tourist spots. It is a convenient stop near Kokusai-dori (International Street). Nearby landmarks include the Kume Shiseibyo (Confucius Temple), Matsuyama Park, and the historic Naminoue Shrine and Beach. It is a perfect addition to a Naha city tour, being only about 15 minutes by car from Naha Airport.
Because the garden features stone steps, uneven paths, and areas around ponds, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. While there are no strict dress codes, practical attire is best for strolling. Payment for admission can be made via cash or credit card. Please respect the tranquil environment by being mindful of the plants and architecture. While general photography is permitted, please check local rules for commercial photography.
