The Fukushima Prefectural Guest House (Former Imperial Villa of Prince Takamatsunomiya), located in Inawashiro, Fukushima, is an exceptionally precious architectural site that embodies the essence of Japanese history and traditional design. Built during the Taisho era as an imperial retreat, this facility is now designated as a National Important Cultural Property, preserving the exquisite beauty of traditional Japanese architecture. The design, which seamlessly integrates the surrounding natural landscape into its garden, offers visitors a sense of profound tranquility and peace.
The history of this structure dates back to 1922 (Taisho 11). It was constructed as a retreat for Princess Kiko, the wife of Prince Nobuhito of Takamatsunomiya, the third son of Emperor Taisho. The design was led by Kojiho Kozaburo of the Imperial Household Ministry. The estate is characterized by its pure Japanese-style construction that maximizes the natural scenery, serving as a companion to the Western-style 'Tenkyo-kaku.' In 1952, the property was gifted to Fukushima Prefecture by Prince Nobuhito, leading to its current status. It remains a highly prestigious site that has walked alongside the history of the Japanese Imperial Family.
The greatest draw is undoubtedly the breathtaking garden and the historic architectural styles. While the interior of the buildings is generally not open to the public, during the 'Special Open House' days (approximately 100 days per year), visitors can enjoy rare guided tours of the interior via a prior reservation system. The garden is designed to showcase the changing-season beauty of Japan, offering a different aesthetic with every visit. The buildings themselves, as Important Cultural Properties, are a testament to the pinnacle of Japanese architectural craftsmanship.
The gardens are open for free viewing from May 1st to October 31st, between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM. To fully appreciate the historical atmosphere, a bright, sunny day is highly recommended. Please note that the gardens are closed from November 1st to April 30th; plan your visit accordingly. Additionally, since Special Open House events often take place in the morning, it is essential to check the official schedule in advance.

We highly recommend visiting both, as the contrast between the Western architecture of Tenkyo-kaku and the Japanese-style architecture of the Guest House provides a unique cultural perspective. The surrounding Inawashiro area also offers many scenic spots, including beautiful lakes and historic streetscapes.
As the garden paths contain many gravel sections, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. If you wish to tour the interior during a Special Open House, a reservation is mandatory and must be made at least 2 days in advance via the official website or by phone. While garden entry is free, building tours require participation in the specific program. To preserve the tranquility of this historic site, please keep voices low and respect the heritage of the premises.
