Fukuroda Falls, located in Daigo Town, Ibaraki Prefecture, is celebrated as one of the three most beautiful waterfalls in Japan. Every autumn and winter, this spectacular 120m high and 73m wide waterfall hosts a special seasonal illumination event called "Daigo Light." As night falls, the powerful daytime flow transforms into a mystical scene, with the entire waterfall bathed in soft, ethereal light. It is a unique experience where the raw power of nature meets delicate, artistic lighting.
Fukuroda Falls is a designated National Scenic Spot known for its dramatic seasonal changes. Whether it is the lush greenery of spring, the refreshing breeze of summer, the vibrant autumn leaves, or the frozen ice falls of winter, the falls offer a different face to every visitor. The autumn illumination is particularly famous for highlighting the brilliant colors of the foliage. Additionally, the area is recognized as a "Lovers' Sanctuary," making the romantic, illuminated scenery a popular destination for couples.
The main highlight is the illuminated Fukuroda Falls itself. The light displays make the mist and the movement of the water appear even more vivid and dreamlike. The "Light Tunnel" (Viewing Tunnel) leading to the falls is another must-see. This tunnel features seasonal illuminations that change from autumnal colors to winter-themed displays, creating a magical transition. The moment you emerge from the tunnel to see the glowing waterfall is a truly breathtaking experience.
The light-up event typically runs from early November to mid-January. November is perfect for seeing the contrast between the glowing waterfall and the vibrant red and yellow autumn leaves. From December to January, you may witness the "Ice Falls" (Hyobaku), where parts of the waterfall freeze, creating a stunning silver world under the lights. Lighting hours vary: in November, it runs from sunset until 20:00, and in December/January, it runs from sunset until 19:00. The transition from dusk to night is the most magical time to visit.
There are several viewing platforms around the falls. The First Viewing Platform allows you to look up at the massive scale of the falls, while the Second Viewing Platform offers a view from above. Exploring different angles allows you to see how the light reflects off the water in different ways. Interestingly, it is said that from the Second Viewing Platform, the gap in the waterfall can look like a heart shape—a perfect moment to share with a loved one. The well-maintained walkways allow for a relaxing stroll through the crisp night air.
During the light-up season, local events like "Fukuroda no Tsukiakari" may take place, where nearby shopping streets and the riverbanks are decorated with warm lights, creating a cozy atmosphere throughout the town. Daigo Town also offers wonderful local delicacies and seasonal specialties. After enjoying the illuminated falls, we recommend exploring the local restaurants and accommodations to savor the flavors of Ibaraki's natural bounty.
Since this is a nighttime event, staying warm is essential. Temperatures near the falls can drop significantly, and the mist may make you feel even colder. Please bring heavy coats, gloves, and scarves. While some paths are paved, we recommend wearing comfortable, non-slip shoes for walking in the dark.
