Fukuoka Tower is a 234m tall radio tower located in the Seaside Momochi district of Sawara-ku, Fukuoka City. Renowned as Japan's tallest seaside tower, its structure is a right-angled triangular prism covered by 8,000 half-mirrors. These mirrors reflect the light beautifully, allowing the tower to harmonize with the surrounding landscape and serve as an iconic symbol of Fukuoka.
The tower was constructed as a monument for the 1989 Asian Pacific Exposition (known as Yokatopia) and as a symbol for the 100th anniversary of Fukuoka's municipal government. Originally known by the nickname "Mirror Sail," it was a popular attraction during the exposition. Since then, it has served as a vital broadcasting infrastructure while evolving into a beloved observation facility for both locals and tourists. In 2019, to celebrate its 30th anniversary, the tower underwent a full renovation to become a modern facility offering cutting-edge digital experiences.
The highlight is the observation deck located 123m above ground. Reached in just 70 seconds via elevator, the deck offers a 360-degree panoramic view spanning from the Fukuoka cityscape to Hakata Bay. Following the 2019 renewal, the tower introduced exhibits utilizing VR (Virtual Reality) and AR (Augmented Reality) technology. Visitors can enjoy immersive displays that blend the scenery outside with digital visuals, such as the "Sky Gacha" experience, where it feels as if capsules are falling from the sky.
The tower presents a different character depending on the time and season. During the day, the view is characterized by the refreshing combination of the blue sea, clear sky, and the urban landscape of Fukuoka. At night, the "Sky Illumination" features glowing stones embedded in the floor, creating a sensation of being enveloped by light. Additionally, the tower's exterior often features special light-up displays and digital signage for seasonal events like Christmas or Tanabata.
The observation deck offers more than just sightseeing. You can enjoy a
