Fukuoka Castle Ruins (Maizuru Park) is a National Historic Site located in Chuo-ku, Fukuoka City. Originally the site of Fukuoka Castle built in the 1600s, the area has been developed into a vast, beautiful public park. Visitors can discover authentic stone walls, the Minami-Ninomaru Tamon Yagura (a designated National Important Cultural Property), and various reconstructed watchtowers and gates. Despite being located in the heart of the city, the park is characterized by a rich natural environment teeming with diverse plants and wildlife.
Fukuoka Castle was constructed by the famous daimyo Kuroda Nagamasa. The castle's design and the strategic placement of its stone walls are preserved as precious historical assets that showcase the engineering techniques of the era. For instance, the Minami-Ninomaru Tamon Yagura and the adjacent Minami-Ninomaru Sumi Yagura are designated as National Important Cultural Properties. The Shiomi Yagura watchtower, believed to have been built during the Edo period, features traditional construction methods using natural and split stones. Many of these historical remains are carefully preserved and passed down through the city's maintenance plans and restoration projects funded by donations.
The ruins offer many visually striking spots to experience history. Key highlights include the castle tower foundations, the Tamon Yagura, and the reconstructed Shiomi Yagura. The Shiomi Yagura stone walls stand approximately 1.7m high and showcase the original Edo-period masonry style. The Najima Gate, which once served as a side gate to Najima Castle, is also a designated Fukuoka City cultural asset. Additionally, the traces of the castle moats (Moats No. 1 through No. 6) remain, creating a beautiful historical landscape integrated with water features.
The park's appearance changes beautifully with the seasons. The most famous time to visit is in April during the "Fukuoka Castle Sakura Festival," when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. You can also enjoy observing various plants and wildlife throughout the year. We recommend visiting during the bright daylight hours to see the contrast between the stone walls and greenery, or in the late afternoon for a more tranquil atmosphere. In recent years, special nighttime illuminations of the castle tower framework have also become a popular attraction.
There are several ways to engage deeply with the history here. At the "Fukuoka Castle Old Exploration Hall," you can learn about the castle's structure and history through ancient maps and scale models. The information counter also provides tips on recommended walking routes. Furthermore, you can participate in periodic free guided tours (such as the Fukuoka Castle/Shiomi Yagura course) to enjoy a walk through the Najima Gate and Shimohashi Goemon while listening to professional historical explanations.
Located in the center of Fukuoka City, the ruins are close to other major landmarks like Ohori Park. It is also very easy to access the Hakata area, making it a convenient base for urban sightseeing. Areas like San-no-maru Square and Kōrohikan Square are frequently used for local events and martial arts demonstrations.
Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended as the park grounds are quite extensive.
