The Nenshi Museum, located in Wakasa Town, Fukui Prefecture, is a specialized institution dedicated to geochronology and archaeology. Its most significant feature is the exhibition of 'Nenshi' (annual laminations) discovered at the bottom of Lake Suzu, one of the Mikata Goko lakes. These Nenshi are incredibly fine, layered sediments that represent a continuous record of approximately 70,000 years—a find of immense global scientific value. Beyond its scientific importance, the museum is celebrated for its striking architecture, having received the 61st BCS Prize for its exceptional design.
Research into Lake Suzu began in 1991, leading to groundbreaking discoveries during boring surveys starting in 2006. Because the lake lacks large river inflows and maintains a stable environment without biological disturbance, the sedimentary layers remained perfectly intact. This 'miraculous sediment' provides extremely high-precision data for radiocarbon dating. In 2012, at a global radiocarbon conference in France, these layers were recognized as a world-standard for geological dating. This scientific milestone was established through international collaboration involving research teams from Japan, the UK, and Germany.

The centerpiece of the museum is the actual 45-meter-long Nenshi specimen. Displayed as thin-section specimens encased in epoxy resin, visitors can witness the breathtaking layers of time spanning 70,000 years. The museum also offers extensive exhibits on how these layers form, comparisons with other Nenshi sites worldwide, and insights into paleoclimatology (the study of past climates).
